Re: 1989 standard shift got stuck in 3rd
I had almost the same problem with mine. It got stuck in 2nd gear and I couldn't get it out no matter what I tried. Decided to dive in and rebuild the sucker. I found 2 problems:
1. The syncro was shot (for 2nd gear in my case)
2. The bearing for 2nd gear was shot. It looked as if the bearing had a flat spot on 2 of the rollers, but the shaft was still ok. Had to replace 2nd gear as well.
Hopefully this is not your problem, but it is something to think about.
Oh btw, When my trans locked up I was teaching my son how to drive a stick. So I'm sure the pounding it took from jack-rabbit starts, dumping the clutch while shifting, etc. contributed greatly to it's demise.
It was a great learning experience for me. It wasn't too difficult, the parts people I dealt with were extreamly helpful and knowledgeable, and I reuilt my trans for under $300. Been running for about 2 years now without incident.
