Default Pinging?

Hey Guy’s…

I’m new to the forum, and the Ranger world. But not to Fords, have owned a few including a few Lightnings. Anyway

I recently picked up a 2008 2.3l Ranger. But I seem to have pinging at the top of the gear before it shifts, only when under-load like going up a hill ect.. Seems to todo this at around 2200-2500 RPM

She’s got 110k miles, Always maintenance at ford dealer, records to show.

Anyways, This is what I have done so far

Fresh Motorcraft Plugs- .44 Double Platinum
New Air Filter
New Fuel Filter
Cleaned MAF

Could it be a partially clogged EGR valve? Or Timing Chain Rattle? Although it dosen’t seem to be a problem on these newer Rangers

Truck runs strong, Idles perfect and no oil burning.

PS: I run 87 Octane, I have tried 91 but I’d have to test again since the tank was half way full with 87 before adding 91

Thanks in advance

Probably carbon build up in the heads. At 110,000 miles I would doubt a bad EGR valve. A timing chain rattle would be evident all the time.

It can very well be, I know the truck has been lugged around most of the life as it was used to be driven inside a naval base.. Very rarely did it hit the highway.. I’m sure it idled a bit too..

Last night I filled it up with 91 on an empty tank, and put it away.. I will continue to do some testing , if 91 octane fixes the problem I will pull the plugs and sea foam the cylinders

If 91 octane stops the pinging either seafoam or have the timing set back 3 degrees.

Hi dvrich,

How would I go about setting back the timing some? With a tune?
