Default 2.3L exhaust manifold

i feel really dumb asking this being a Ford mechanic but its something that have been wondering and no one can seem to give me an answer.

so, i have a 91 ranger 2.3L 8 plug. my question is the exhaust manifold has a piece of flexible exhaust tubing that goes from the center of the manifold right at the collector straight up towards the airbox. At the end there is a black plastic snorkel end on it.

does anybody know what this is or what its for?

I'm out of town at the moment and don't have my truck with me otherwise i'd take a picture. I'll be home tomorrow though and get a picture for you guys if no one can help me out.

Its for cold weather to help bring heat to the engine to smooth idle till it warns up but you really dont need it

If you think about it if you put a cold air intake on you would have to remove it any way.

I heard that in the intake tube from the MAF sensor to the throttle body their is a baffle that also restricts air. If you were to remove this baffle, you can gain some possible horsepower. What to you all think?

Well I thought it was to introduce inert exhaust gas into the combustion chamber to control combustion and overheating. But maybe that's a whole different EGR cycle. Hell if you've got the 8 plug motor it might be part of your waste spark system.
