Default Crankshaft pulley bolt 2.5L

How does one hold the pulley from moving while trying to get the bolt out? Got all done except for this is the only thing holding us up from finishing the job. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. We are not smarter than a fith grader. Thanks!

If no strap wrench use a belt and a friend who can hold it tight.

I use an old serpentine belt wrapped around the pulley, and secured to the frame rail.

Sounds good but how do you secure it to the frame? I was also told to go to AutoZone and borrow a braker bar and let it sit on the frame and tap the ignition. What side of the frame would you sit the bar on? I sure don't want to tighten it by doing it wrong.

This I did and it worked very well. We wrapped the groves into the pulley groves then went around several times on top of that and tired it off on the drivers side frame. Took a lot of strength to brake it loose with a long braker pipe towards the passengers side. Thanks so much for this post. It worked great!!!

I left mine in gear and had the parking brake on. That and a long breaker bar.

Reviving an old thread just to give a different and much easier method to loosen or tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt (at least on the 2000 Ranger 2.5L). The crankshaft pulley has two holes around its edge (see picture #1). I assume that is for the special Ford service tool built to hold the pulley. If you stick a strong bolt or metal rod into one of those holes, you can use it as a stud and run a pipe between that stud and the socket that you already have over the pulley bolt (see picture #2). Push on the pipe in the opposite direction that you're pushing on the pulley bolt. It will hold the pulley in place.

BTW, put some cardboard over the radiator (see picture #2) to protect it from accidental bangs and scrapes by tools and parts.

Normal right hand thread.
Remove a spark plug, and stuff in a length of rope. Turn the crankshaft in the 'loosen' direction until the rope jams the piston from passing TDC. Loosen bolt.
Reverse procedure to tighten, and then back off the crankshaft to remove the rope, and re-install the spark plug.
