Tore Into My FoMoCo Oil Filter
I saved my old oil filter from my first free dealer oil change and opened it up. Why? Just for the heck of it as I've never seen the insides of one before other than on the TV program "How Its Made"
Shown here is the factory installed bulk looking filter.
I was surprised how small the actual filter is.
Extremely strong glue which holds the top and bottom caps on. Shown here is the top(?) away from the threaded end.
I wasn't able to get the top and bottom caps off the pleated filter element without destroying it.
In conclusion I'm impressed how well it was made but surprised how small the actual filter element is.
It was a fun and interesting deconstruction.
Oh, my filter looked clean and new which wasn't surprising as my truck had only 1010 miles on it when the filter was changed.
EDIT: Sorry for the blurry pics. I was trying to get my camera to focus closer than it could. lol!

Re: Tore Into My FoMoCo Oil Filter
I have heard about the Fram filters being crappy. I know for certain I haven't used one in over ten years. Before that I probably have since I didn't know better.

Re: Tore Into My FoMoCo Oil Filter
Long time ago in high school I worked at NAPA. We had a display on the counter of a sliced open NAPA (Wics) filter and a sliced open Fram filter. Didn't even need to say anything. It spoke for itself. That bad.

Re: Tore Into My FoMoCo Oil Filter
Purolator, Mobile 1, K & N, and Wix/Napa filters are good filters. Fram, not so much, there is a lot of shoddy craftsmanship on them. Honda filters are made by Fram for those who own Hondas. Needless to say, I don't buy Honda oil filters.

Re: Tore Into My FoMoCo Oil Filter

yep, i agree. as a matter of fact ford has put a warning out in regards to the 5.4 V8 that if they come in with cam phaser noise to check and see if a fram filter is on it, if there is in some cases they void the warranty. the anti drain back valves in the frams are made from cardboard and they deteriorate over time and plug the oil passages that feed oil to the cams and cam phasers and they can become starved for oil. i used to run fram on my ranger untill i read about the issues people were having so i switched to motorcraft or mobil1 if it was on sale and the rattle i used to get on cold startup completely went away. that was all the convincing i needed to never buy fram again.

The oil on that filter still looks good.

Re: Tore Into My FoMoCo Oil Filter
I have a damn fram on my truck and hate it. I only have it because I was broke and someone gave it to me. They are horrible in chevys, because they drop the oil pressure.

Wix filters are excellent but no better than Motorcraft or Purolator. As shitty as frams are, I am really surprised that John Force endorses them......money money money.
