Towing
Not sure if this has been brought up before or if this is ever the right place to post this, but i'm wondering how much my ranger could tow if i put a Class III hitch on it. It's a 1997 Ranger XLT 2.3L I4. Auto, Regular Cab, short box. Bumper says 2000/200 but..i don't plan on pulling with the bumper and am just wondering if I could pull more then that and not blow something out of it.
Thanks,
Kenny

Re: Towing
I towed a huge tandom axle U-Haul trailer about 400 miles when I moved to Maryland in the spring. The trailer empty weighs 2500lbs and I had it loaded to a gross of probably 3500lbs or more.
Towing this much weight with my 4.0L auto on flat highway was really pushing it's practical limits. I could barely keep it in overdrive on flat ground. The slightest uphill kicked it down to second gear to maintain highway speed. Accellerating was painful and stopping was a process of down shifting to not melt the brakes. Local streets at slower speeds was fine but asking it to perform with that kind of load on the highway, not so much.
If that's how it went with a 4.0, I cringe thinking how a 2.3 is going to handle it.

Re: Towing
alright, i don't plan on hauling much, just like maybe a small flatbed trailer for like a golf cart or four wheeler/snowmobile or something along those lines, or a small fishing boat or like a pop-up camper. The main thing i'm concerned about is tongue weight.

Re: Towing
I towed this a month ago. I had a bed full of gear too. On flat roads and slight inclines the truck 2.5L 5 speed did just fine. Once we hit the hills of the mountains it was tough. Overall I guess it did alright though. Not sure on the total weight.

Re: Towing
@ObsoleteE, alright, that's about all i'd be pulling to, maybe a little heavier, i don't even own a boat yet but if i ever got one, i'd want to make sure i could pull it, lol. But, your truck doesn't even look like it's squating to bad, here hill's aren't to bad (rural Michigan) so it shouldn't be to bad than, Thanks for your Input

Re: Towing
@Hoz, yeah, i know that, lol. I would check the owner manual if i had one, truck didn't come with it. the Bumper says 2000lbs and 200lbs tongue weight. That camper is a little heavy, but the other one i looked at was 1800 or 1900lbs. The main thing i'd like to know is..if i but on a Class III hitch, i know i can still only pull 2000lbs, but would that boost my tongue weight max at all?

Re: Towing
Oh wow, thanks for the owner manual link Model A! And thanks Hoz for your help aswell. I found out i had the 4.10 gears so that should help a little bit. My fear was the bumper falling off as well being it is already a little bent/warped. I saw an S10 i believe it was going down the expressway with a small lawn service trailer set-up. the ball was point almost straight back the bumper was bent down to bad. But, if that boosts my tongue weight that's half the battle cause i hadn't found to many things with a 200lbs tongue weight in my google searches, lol. Thanks again to everyone who helped answer my question.

Re: Towing
also being that you are from Michigan and the truck is a 97 make sure you check your rear leafspring shackles and hangers. especially if you are going to tow......... they rust out....i have a small write up on swapping them out if you need it........
