I have a 97 ranger 2.3L that I'm trying to figure out what's going on. When I first start the engine, it will idle fine but will run rough for about the first 3 minutes and has even stalled in that time. My scan tool had code P0401 (insufficient egr flow.) I replaced the DPFE sensor which cleared the code. But still the same symptoms. I replaced the IAC valve, egr solenoid, plugs and plug wires. Would running mid-grade fuel help? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Make sure your throttle body is sparkling clean.
Aside from cleaning throttle body & IAC, replacing my throttle position sensor solved my problem with occasional low idling.

You might want to check 1)fuel pressure, 2)ECT and 3)ACT. First is you need proper pressure to get extra fuel when cold. Second is engine coolant temperature which could confuse the computer if incorrect(warm) temp is reported. Third is the incoming Air Charge Temperature, which could also make the ECM think you didn't need any 'choke' action.
