Problems with 2.5 timing belt marks (Images)
Hey Guys,
I installed a new timing belt and tensioner and I'm having problems getting the camshaft marks to line up perfectly. All of the other marks line up pretty good except for the camshaft.
Images below. Are these OK?
Crankshaft
Oil Pump
Camshaft

Sometimes you have to turn it over a few times, then release the tensioner and let it remove the rest of the slack.

After I got the new belt on I loosened the tensioner bolt slowly. Once the tensioner sprang back and applied tension I rotated the engine 3-5 times and went back to TDC. Still the same results. From the image it looks like it's a half of tooth off. Not sure if that's good or not.

Re: Problems with 2.5 timing belt marks (Images)
Ima gonna say the cam is one tooth too far advanced, overall.
Given 12:00 noon on the crankshaft keyway is ~not exact.
Look at the pump diamond vs mark, not exactly on, just a tad 'back'.
Look at the cam triangle, just a tad 'advanced'.
Move the crank a smidge to get the pump diamond exactly on, and the cam triangle, I think, will be one tooth too far advanced.
You are very close.
Try the cam back one, let the tensioner rip, and twirl the crankshaft at least two complete turns. Check your key, diamond and triangles.

Appreciate the advice. I will give that a shot and see how it goes.

After probably 20 times adjusting I have not really gotten that far. The Camshaft is still off half a tooth. Not sure what to do.

Re: Problems with 2.5 timing belt marks (Images)
There are two styles of belt. Perhaps you got the 'other' one. Some have square teeth, other style has teeth with rounded edges. From reading.
Check with the store. Which brand did you get? I trust Gates, for one, to have good belts. Dayco likely good also. Goodyear if available any more. I would not buy a "Bobs Pizza and Timing Belt Company" version. Or one with non-local language on the box.
If you get the sprocket teeth within a half tooth, you are likely ok. After installing, repeating myself, rotate the crankshaft two times(insures the cam has gone around 1 turn) or more, bring back to TDC, with the crankshaft keyway at noon. Take a picture or three to show your timing, post them.

Appreciate the help, and advice. I have the Dayco 95276K1 belt and tensioner. It has the rounded teeth. I will be trying it again this weekend and will post back the results. I really appreciate the help!
Thanks!
God Bless!!

Re: Problems with 2.5 timing belt marks (Images)
You might try having a helper hold the cam in place. Sometimes they don't like to stay in perfect place, and add that to a little bit of slack, boom, off a tooth.
I always go from crank to intermediate pulley to cam pulley, once you get that belt wrapped around the crank and intermediate pulley you can pull on it, it should not rotate at all (unless you're He-Man, or something) and you can use this method to help pull slack out of that side of the belt. Then once its slipped over the cam pulley, all slack should be on the tension side of the belt.

Re: Problems with 2.5 timing belt marks (Images)
What turismo said. Slight tension on the crank>aux>cam spans, all slack from cam>tensioner>crank. The tension release will tighten that side up as needed.
It's not rocket surgery or brain science, but it does take a bit of patience, and being willing to put it in place, as best you can, release the tension, spin a bit, and look.
More or less, you should end up within a half-tooth of being exactly on.
I think the rounded teeth are the newer version, which I think you have. The older were square teeth, not sponge bob square pants...

Re: Problems with 2.5 timing belt marks (Images)
Just got back from working on the truck. I got the timing marks pretty perfect. The oil pump is dead on, and the camshaft is just before. I have looked at pictures on jegs and other sites selling new engines, and they are also just before on the camshaft like mine.
Images below!
Thanks for all the help guys!
God Bless!!
