Default 1991 2.3L Oil Pan Access

Have a low mileage original engine that lost oil pressure. Gauge fluctuates occasionally. Drove it home paying close attention to temp gauge which never moved off low side of range as is normal. Suspected Oil pressure sender unit failure initially. Was going to drive it locally at moderate speeds to parts store when engine started to display rough running - Put it back in the garage quickly. Think first step is to access oil pump screen to make sure it is clear. If so perhaps a new pump.

While I was underneath trying to locate the oil pressure sending unit, I noticed that the oil pan appears to have a metal plate attached with two bolts just forward of the drain plug. This almost looks like a removable panel to access the oil pump filter screen. I can find no mention of this online or in other photos of 2.3 L oil pans. The Chilton manual does say that the 1991 2.3 2wd engine does not need to be removed to remove the oil pan.

Any thoughts on what that metal plate on the oil pan maybe?

Has anybody had any luck removing the 1991 oil pan without pulling the motor?

Thanks in advance

Default Re: 1991 2.3L Oil Pan Access

The oil pressure sender/sensor should be on the drivers side, on the cylinder head. Very much towards the back end of the engine. Most have a single connector, either the switch used with the warning light, or the bulbous sender used with the gauge.
I have never seen an access plate on the bottom of the oil pan. At least never seen a factory one. Some have been able to use a coat hanger or other probe to scrape loose bits of pan gasket from the pump pickup screen. I am not sure if the pan can be removed without pulling the engine. I think the motor mounts must be unfastened, and the engine lifted up from the mounts to gain clearance. If you do that, be sure to have some jack stands or blocks of wood under the crankshaft(front) in case your crane or come-along has problems. That would not be a good thing.
