Default Motorcraft Spark Plug / Wire Part Number Help

Hey Guys,

I have a 98 Ford Ranger XLT 2.5L and am having a really hard time finding a solid answer on the part number for motorcraft double platinum plugs. Every site such as Rock Auto, AutoZone, Advance Auto etc... Only lists Finewire Platinum. Everyone in the forums recommends double platinum but I can't find a part number lol.

I went to Autolites site and they list APP104 for their double platinum s but I want Motorcrafts. My truck doesn't list the spark plug number under the hood, just that I need 8 and the gap.

I looked on the forum under specifications and it lists SP-432 but sites such as AutoZone etc... are conflicting saying it is a single platinum.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
God Bless!!

Try these, and get more confused. If you think that is bad, try finding the correct spark plug for an Escape/Mariner/Tribute with a 3.0 V6. So many listed, and the parts stores are useless as they will come up with 43 'will fit' plugs when you ask for the proper plug.

LOL that's some craziness. Can't believe it's so difficult to get the correct plug number. I went with the SP-432 for the plugs and the WR-4109 for the wires. Hopefully they will do the job. I will end up changing them again in another 50k anyhow. By that time, they will have come up with teleportation and I won't have to worry about it lol. Really appreciate the help.

According to my Ford Parts counter catalog, you should be running SP432 plugs and WR4089 wires. The plug according to Motorcraft is a "finewire platinum" and if you Google the part number, you'll find many list it as double platinum while others list it as platinum. Professionally, I would be suggesting whatever my work catalog tells me it takes so a Motorcraft SP432 whatever it may be, platinum or double platinum....go Motorcraft.

An oddity to note...........For 01-05, the 4.0 SOHC took according to Ford took a SP440 which is platinum. For 06, they changed the spec to SP412 which is a plain copper plug. Meanwhile nothing really changed as to the engine itself....just bean counters for life maint changed.

In short, platinum plugs last longer than copper plugs. Given it's a 2.5L, I would throw platinum plugs at it plus a PCV as those are the most frequent wear points of Lima engines period.

Thanks so much. Really appreciate the help. I have ordered the SP-432 plugs and the WR-4109 wires (Got those today).

I didn't know this until you posted that the WR-4089 are the same wires, it's just they don't have the plastic extension boots on the ends, and are cheaper than the WR-4109 because they come with the plastic extension boots. I will note this next time I buy plug wires I can just use my plastic extension boots and buy those to save money.

I also purchased the PCV valve and have that ready because I am installing a new valve cover gasket as well.

I have a leak in my EGR tube so I just ordered the EGR valve and tube as well. They both looked a little crunchy lol.

I also have to install a new blend door, and I figured while I have the dash out I might as well install a new heater core. Installing a new water pump, timing chain, and thermostat. I ordered the complete new AC system because I am tired of not having AC. Also got a new power steering rebuild kit, and cooler because that's leaking. A few more things but I can't remember. It's going to be a busy week.

Thanks again for the help guys!
God Bless!!

Be careful on that heater core replacement. I did one while repairing an A/C leak, and it turned out to be a piece of work. It started filming the windshield with vapor until I finally bypassed it totally. Checking, I found the tube was barely attached to the tank on the end of the finned core. It was wobbly, and took minute force to remove. That was a 'lifetime guarantee' part from one of the auto parts stores.
I would have been better off with the original, which was giving no problem.
So, be sure to check the quality of the part you install compared to the OEM.

That would be a bummer. Great advice. I will be sure to do that!
