Default 1999 ranger 2.5 coils

Which coil on a 2.5L is the primary and secondary. Just FYI, i cant the one in the front to give any spark off number four or number one electrode. Is this a problem? I used the firing order from this site and it does work, but still cant get any spark from #1 or #4 terminal while running? Just looking for an explination.

You could try swapping the two coils, and if the misfire follows, you know your coil has failed. Look for cracks in the plastic, starting with the 'towers' the wires plug into, and working down towards the coil base.
Plugs #1 & #4 are paired, so if one is totally fouled or shorted, no sparky. They both fire together, as do 2 & 3.

Both coils are brand new. The primary fires on all four coils. Its just the secondary coil. It only fires on #3 and #2. Just dont now why a new coil wont fire on #1 and #4 . I have alreday swapped them and got the same result.

Given that the coils are operated by the computer, I would be checking the signals it is producing. The coils are energized by 12V when the key is ON, and the computer provides a ground to energize the coil(build a magnetic field), and removes the ground to collapse the field, producing a spark. If you check a wiring schematic which may be available from bbbind dot com, you can check the wires feeding the coils 12V and the one the computer grounds/opens to see if that is happening for #1 & #4. When the key is ON, you will find 12V on both coil terminals as they are connected by the primary winding.

Thanks tom... i will be checking this out this week. Let me ask a guestion. Do all 8 plugs fire at the same time or are intermittent on the exhaust side to burn excess fuel vapor?

As I understand, the exhaust side plugs are fired all the time, while the intake side are fired in specific circumstances. Originally, the intake side were inoperative until the engine had started and run for a bit, and later models started to use the intake side more. Details I do not have.

Got a bad ground side switched signal on that coils connector.

Center wire is hot and each wire on the side is grounded by the computer to ground the coil primary.

This is a waste spark system so the coils are setup for companion cylinders. 1&4 are on the same coil.

Connect a test light clamp to the positive post on the battery and touch the probe tip to the ground side switch wire for the 1&4 coil (should be the wire closest to those towers).

If the signal is working the test light should flash as the computer is grounded out the signal.

Your control will be testing the 2&3 ground side switches wire.
