Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
So I've had this issue a couple times, the tach, speedo, odometer and temp guage all quit working and the check engine light comes on. When it happens while I'm driving, I can still drive normally and my radio, lights blinkers and stuff works. The guage will usually start working after a second and go back off. If this happens when I try to start it, nothing happens. The fuel pump doesnt come on, the engine doesn't even try to turn over. I got an alternator from a jy and a battery test and they seem to be good, and all of my fuses are good as well. My trucks got around 134,000 miles. Any help as to what it could be would be appreciated. I had a locksmith coming out but he suggested it wasnt the chipped key giving me an issue but possibly the ignition lock cylinder. I've had it suggested to me to take it to Ford, but they're gonna charge me an arm and 2 legs to fix and if the cylinder could be the issue I can have it here in a couple days for only $103 with 2 keys and install that myself. Here are a couple videos to help better explain.
The radio used to work, but this just started happening yesterday. I haven't fiddled/messed with anything for this to start happening.

Which light is rapid flashing in red? It’s hard to see in the video.

Re: Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
I had similar issue. The rapid flash means something is wrong with the transponder possibly. I ended up replacing that and my pcm to get my functioning.

How much did that cost and where did you get your parts from?

Re: Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
I got the transponder from amazon for like $43 and I got the PCM from eBay programmed for my truck for $128. I tried a bunch of other trouble shooting before it got to that point though. Yours could be a different issue. I’m no expert.

Re: Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
Without any more than what was posted, I first thought of a loss of power or ground. The PATS interrupts the starter operation, from what I understand, and should have little effect on the radio or instrument cluster. I would be looking for a wiring diagram that I could use to check for presence or lack of voltage to spots within the power distribution box, or grounds in the same. I did not look at the videos.

Re: Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
The instrument cluster on the 04+ trucks is an integrated part of the PATS system. The cluster is programmed to the PATS system to prevent swapping or tampering with it. If the cluster malfunctions (shorts, looses power or ground ect) the system will not be able to read the clusters code and therefore lock and disable the starter.

Dirtman:"If the cluster malfunctions (shorts, looses power or ground ect) the system will not be able to read the clusters code and therefore lock and disable the starter."
Does this mean(loss of power) that if you remove the cluster to replace a bulb, the PATS system will disable the starter? What if your battery dies? I have had both experiences on an 07 Mariner, and the PATS kept working. Was I just lucky?

Re: Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
The PATs system reads the cluster like another key, if its not present or has the wrong ID it wont start. The point of this is to stop odometer fraud. If you try to swap the cluster with a lower mileage unit it will have the wrong ID and not start unless you take it to the dealer to be programmed.
Changing a bulb will have no effect. And if your battery is dead the starter obviously aint gonna work anyway lol. But if the cluster is shorting out or otherwise damaged where the PATs is not able to read the ID you'll have a no start scenario.
This is ONLY true of the clusters with the digital odometer. In rangers they were started in 04-05, no idea about the explorer, mountaineer, mariner.

Re: Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
we have replaced a few clusters here for PATS issues. 06 started the PATS cluster for the explorer i believe and 08 for escapes
----------
my advice to you
take it to the dealer, they are properly equipped to diag and repair it

Re: Starting Issue 2008 2.3l manual
Dont know if it will apply?
My heater in my 1997 2.3L went out suddenly and it took out the battery.
The fuse did pop but it was a pretty high amp rating.
Connected in the heater circuit apparently is also the radio
That was one thing in your post that caught my eye

When programming your own keys with 2 working keys all keys need to be separated in different spots in the process. Manual dont mention this. (One in pass floor mat, one in driver side floor mat, etc)
