Default 2003 Ranger timing issues.

Hi,

New member here. Bought my Ranger about 3 years ago with about 110K on it.

I have a 2003 2.3L with 141,000 miles. It suddenly developed timing issues, running very roughly. This feels similar to having the coils go out. I had replaced them probably 25,000 miles ago, so I got the OEM coils this time and replaced them again. No go, it was back firing through in the intake valve at low idle and was running roughly out to 3000RPM.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Thanks, Marty

Also, I double checked the wiring and it is all good.

Update. The code check indicates the front O2 sensor.

Before replacing an 02 sensor... check that you don't have a vacuum leak. A 'sudden rough running' could be a symptom of un-metered(unknown, actually) air getting into the intake manifold, and messing up the computers' calculation of how much fuel to squirt. It may or may not make noise you can detect.
You can use carb cleaner or propane(unlit) directed with a length of tubing to add 'fuel' through a leak to the intake. If it gets the propane/fuel it should clean up the idle, and that would indicate you are close to the leak.

What was the actual code? "front o2 sensor" is meaningless.

O2 codes are usually not an actual problem with the sensor itself but a condition causing it to read higher or lower voltage than it should (i.e a vacuum leak like Tom said)

Thanks for the input. I’m out of town and will get the codes when I get back. Specifically it was the bank 1 sensor and cylinder 1 miss fire. It seemed to be running rich and also back fires sometimes through the intake manifold.

Thanks
