2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Hi guys Im back lol
is there an alternative dealing with this "heater valve" Its the black thing heat goes through black...
I've replaced this P.O.S. 5 x in last 2 yrs..IT DOES' 'NT WORK!!
Everyone of them leaks fluid from bottom...I used cheap too Ford Motor
Craft...Same problem every time.
Is there something else that can be done with it?
Thanks in advance!!!!!

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
You can just ditch it and run the heater core lines direct like old school setups, not ideal but it would stop the leaking. However something doesn't sound right, I've got 3 vehicles that use that same heater control valve and only ever needed to fix one once after 12 years. Is your coolant good? Are you using worm drive clamps and over tightening it? Just spitballing.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Hello No I have the screw type clamps on all hoses.I just replaced radiator past summer.
Like I said I've replaced it at least 5 times...Last was with Motorcraft
Under neath I call it a "bell" is where it always leaks from. I was wondering if I had to much fluid water in reservoir..its always at max.
I was gonna let whatever weeps out come out an not refill it..Sometimes it goes down to min on tank other times the tank is empty.
I hate losing the fluid as its like $10 a gallon..Better term is it weeps from valve not leaks But it dumps enough..
I hope I explained this clear enough. I dont have the mechanics lingo. LOL
Thanks for responding
Dennis

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
I owned three Rangers and logged over 175000 or more on each and never had a problem with a heater valve on any of them.
This valve is a part that really needs to be OEM.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Just so were clear, this is the part you're referring to correct? The only other thing that I can think of is your radiator cap is fubar and the system is building too much pressure which is blowing out the valve. Is it running hotter than normal? Any signs of coolant in the oil? Any miss fires? While getting a bunch of junk parts from an auto parts store is not uncommon, you said you also used a oem ford part thaf failed as well so something is wrong here. Getting a bad ford valve would be a rarity.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Yup thats the culprit As your looking at valve the "can" thats shown,
on top is where it weeps out.. Like I mentioned before I replaced radiator along with reservoir cap. Flushed out coolant n water when replacing rad. Like everything on this truck the coolant n water that was flushed was very clean for an engine with so many miles.
The temp range is just a tad below "normal"
So with that being said LOL....... I appreciate your time in "helping" me figure this out..
"We" will figure this out!! Im determined! Hate being defeated

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
The "can" is the vacuum actuator. No coolant should even be in there to leak out, Its literally not connected to the coolant flow. the little metal rod on the bottom attaches to the flow valve. If there was somehow coolant coming from the actuator, its would also be in your intake.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
I know for certain there is no water in intake
I havent looked at valve close up in a while..Your certain no water runs through that?
What would be purpose of it? I know there is vac actuator on it. I thought without really studying valve that it regulated water flow to heater....
Its suppose to warm up where I live towards end of week..I will take a closer look and see if I can get a few pics..Now the thing really makes no sense to me..Lol what happen to good ole days where hoses ran from block to heater? "I'LL BE BACKKK" oye

The "can" is just a vacuum diaphragm. When you hit the switch in the dash, intake vacuum is applied and then the little metal rod pulls on the actual valve to open or close coolant flow. So ONLY vacuum i.e air should be in the "can". The vacuum from the "can" and coolant from the "valve" are not connected in a way that could cross paths.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Thanks for your replies. Not sure if I mentioned it but I lost a very good friend and love of my life couple weeks ago.So I'm trying to deal with that, and i apologise ..I dont want you thinking this isnt important or that your wasting time bc I haven't gotten back to you.
Anyway with winter here, its hard to try an do any work in cold. I would like to have someone who can turn "heater on n off" so I can inspect what happens with that valve.
Still a mystery to me I used "water seeker" and checked oil.there is no signs of water in oil..
Another odd question related to heat..why is it compressor runs when heat is on? Is that a "Ford thing?" Doubt it has anything to do with heater valve, but it is another puzzle I have..Thank you again for your input.i really do appreciate any help you are giving
Dennis

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Sorry for your loss brother.
I have no new info to give except about your AC question. The AC compressor coming on with the heat is in fact a ford thing. The AC compressor is used with the heater to dry the air to keep the windows from fogging up. I think the only setting the ac compressor wont come on is heat on forward vents. But it may even come on in that setting. There is a common "cheat" to disable this feature which involves putting a toggle switch on the purple wire behind the control switch. The purple wire is the compressor command. No command, no compressor... But fan and heat still function. However if you do disable it, you will probably realize pretty quick the benefits of the compressor running with the heat on.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Take a picture of the valve with the engine running at idle, heat on. Then take a picture with the heat off. One way should have the lever moved 90 from the other if the valve is working. You can 'defeat' the valve by manually moving it open or closed, and then disconnecting the vacuum servo and zip tying the valve the way you want it.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
Thanks for info on the ac Dirtman..figured it might be tied into defrost.
I can live with it being the way it is. Jus wanted to be sure and it wasnt "rigged" by previous owners.
I will try n post some pics of my "baby" it really is in great shape considering miles on it.

Re: 2002 heat vavle on 2.3
just wanted to give you guys update on this heat valve from hell lol
I was looking at engine when I noticed a drip near valve..After watching for a few minutes I noticed the "drip" is coming from where the "arm" goes into valve to open or close valve.
Like I said previous this is 4th 5th one I have changed in 2 yrs. I noticed if Idon't fill reservoir to "min" keep it "half way" from minimum it doesn't weep out all that much...
Anyways that's where Im at with that
