Default What year 4 cyl. Engines fit a 1996 Ranger

What other years 4 cylinder engines are simple direct swaps to replace a 1996 2.3? Don't want to swap heads or intakes or change electronics. Just pull complete motor and bolt 2.3 accessories to it. It is a 5 speed truck and has no AC from the factory, if it matters..

Appears as if the 2.5 replaced the 2.3 shortly after 1996 and may be the same, but IDK if any other changes were made that would complicate the matter. Have located multiple 2.5's for cheap nearby, but not 2.3's except older versions that have very different ignition and intake setups.

So what years are direct swaps for 2.3 and will the 2.5 work from certain years also?

Thanks, Mike

Thought that would be an easy question, but apparently not...

I don't have the answer, so did not reply. But. You could check with car-parts dot com, looking for an engine(complete) to replace the one you have. The search will return all engines that will bolt in to replace the installed one. If you look at the model year reported, you will be able to figure out which years are a direct replacement. At least it should work that way.

Thanks for that tip. It does only list the 96-97 as direct interchange so apparently 2.5 doesn't swap (specs show higher fuel system pressure too), but site did locate a complete 97 only 12 miles away from me, so will have to check it out.
