Default 1991 died and wont start

1991 2.3l with a 5spd
dont know if its 111000 or 211000 miles leaning towards the 200000 one though.

about 2 weeks ago my fuel gauge quit working and then today on the way home the engine cut and wont start back up. Engine turns fine but won't start. I have never really been able to hear the pump prime and am thinking the pump is out but want a way to make sure before I drop 100 bucks to change it.

also do you reccommend pulling the bed on this job? I have dropped several gas tanks but if its easier to pull the bed I am all for it.

thanks
jason

personally i would pull the bed its not to hard just detatch the wires from the tail lights if i remember correct its near the inner fender wells
then take out the 3 bolts near the filler neck then use a T-60 bit (im pretty sure thats the right one its either that or t-55) to take out the bolts its gonna be a pain if its the first time its been taken off.
also as far as your gauge problem it is probably the float has a leak in it and has filled up with gas its a fairly common problem with the type of floats 2nd gens use and if you have a junkyard near by an expo or bronco II from 89-92 should work as far as fuel pumps go

well a little good news i guess... i had to leave it on the road a 1/4 mile from home in a hurry, wife had to get to work and i had to get home with the kids so she took me and i was guessing on the fuel pump.

the timing belt is the culprit here, at first check just pulling the top of the cover it looked intact so i jumped to the pump. good thing is a belt is 20 dollar vs. the 120ish for a pump.

Cops showed up when i went back down and MADE me have it towed home, so first thing in the morning its off to the parts store and putting the belt on. its been a while since i have done one.

also i have had someone mention to me advancing the timing for a little more giddy up... mine is a pooch and would like to be able to keep 65mph in 4th gear on a hill. info on this?

personally i dont know jack about the 2.3l but i think they might be talking about the distributer im not sure tho i know when you turn it a bit *sometimes* you might be able to get better performance
im pretty sure that if you mess with the main timing it can totally mess things up i would recomend you get a service manual if you dont have one and make sure the timing is right when you put on the belt

oh and im pretty sure the fuel guage not working is just a leaking float which is a cheap fix and worth the time and effort
