Re: 2003 Ranger 2.3 fan bearing in timing cover
If the bearing is pressed into the cover, you might be able to get a replacement bearing of the same size from web vendors. I have gotten bearings from Fastenal, shipped to the local store for $.65 where I then picked them up. Their price was very good compared to what DaRiver vendors were asking for a similar bearing.
Most bearings have their size marked on the side of the inner or outer race, and are sold in very common sizes. Look at the bearing or if you have to be on the road quickly, look at one in a boneyard to get the numbers so you can order and have it on hand. Bearings that have plastic shields or seals can be used where open bearings are specified by just popping the seals out of their groove. Metal shielded bearings may be retained more firmly, I do not know.
You can make up a press using a C-clamp and some sockets to push the old bearing out and push the new one in place. Warning, NEVER press on the center race of a new bearing is it may ruin the bearing. Always press on the outer race, leaving the center alone. To my knowledge there is no way a bearing can be installed where you cannot install another of the same size. You might have to rent, borrow or buy a 'blind bearing' removing tool. They have fingers that are expanded behind the center race, and a 'slide hammer' to pull the old bearing out. Once you do that, the removed bearing will likely have damage from the puller, but that doesn't matter if you are replacing. In that case, you can put the bearing in the freezer for a while to chill it(reduce size) so it can be tapped into place more readily.
