I did look at some of the older threads on this issue, but mine seems to be a bit different then the ones i seen.


Well I just picked up a 2000 5 speed Ranger a few days ago and I've noticed that when I come to a red light or a stop sign and push in the clutch to stop, the idle revs up for about 5 to 10 seconds, then drops back down to normal. Otherwise the truck runs, drives and idles just fine. It almost feels like the throttle is sticking for that 5 to 10 seconds (but i don't think that's it) Also, from time to time i do notice the idle picks up as I'm driving down the road, almost like I have a cruse control on. I'm new to rangers and i really like the truck, but this is really making me rack my brain?! Anyone else experience this or have any idea what i could do ? Thanks so much in advance, B

When you say it revs while actually driving is it only happening while coasting with the clutch in or actually surging (aka) picking up speed? If its only when you press the clutch my first guess is the IAC valve. By design its made to keep rpms up when coasting for emission reasons so it could be sticking.

Its always when I push the clutch in, as I'm slowing down and coming to a stop. I don't have an RPM gauge, but it does seem to rev up pretty high for that 5-10 seconds. But once it revs back down like at a red light, it idles fine until i have to stop again.

First and cheapest thing... Take your IAC off and clean it. Move on from there. Like I said the IAC should maintain like 1500rpm coasting but not rev so it may be sticking open a tad. Also vacuum leak comes to mind. IAC valves and vacuum leaks dont get along.

Ok thanks ! The IAC is definitely rusty from what I can see, so I’ll clean that and check for air leaks this weekend. That definitely sounds like the issue for sure. Thanks again, B

just a heads up, i believe there's a gasket on there which can be reused if you're gentle. hate for you to tear it up like I do sometimes hahaha!. just hoping to save you a bit of trouble

I'm not 100% sure about a year as new as 2000, but I know older years are intentionally programmed to raise the idle when the clutch pedal is pushed. I believe it's mainly for emissions reasons but can't be sure. If you feel like proving/disproving it, you could try disconnecting the connector from the clutch switch (attached to the pedal linkage) with the engine already running, take it for a drive and see if the idle stops changing when pushing the pedal. There is a chance that could set a code, and it would also prevent starting the engine due to being unplugged.

That does not address the idle speed changing while driving, though. Dirty/sticky IAC as suggested is a possibility.

Well I ordered a new IAC and it does come with the gasket. It's supposed to be here tomorrow, so I'll get it on this weekend and I'll let you guys know how i make out with it. Thanks again for all the help!

Well I got Good news and Good news... The new part came in Saturday, but the truck hasn't had any rev issues since Thursday? I know the truck sat for awhile before i bought it, so im guessing it was just sticking for the first week that i drove it. I'm gonna keep the part just in case it does it again. Figures lol But thanks so much for all your help on diagnosing the issue.
