Opps I forgot to mention in my first post. I do in fact have the heater element in the thermostat. It's one of those weird things Ford did for only a couple years. Of course the thermostat assembly is expensive $120 compared to $30..lol I understand why they did it but because lots of german cars have been using that for decades but it's sort of silly non the less since there isn't really that much tech in a ranger.
Depending on load, ambient temp and other things, the PCM trigger something so that it can drop the temp like that. My friend that owns a chevy or gmc truck said his truck does the same thing when going up long graded hills. It freaked him out at first but said it was completely normal.
I wish i would have known this prior to trying to replace parts... but oh well. Now those won't have to be replaced..hahaha
