Default 2001 2.5L fuel pump issues.

2001 2.5L ranger. Had a p0171 ever since I got it about 15-18k miles ago. Chased it a few times on the too much air side but never got anywhere. Well lately it has been suddenly gotten worse. Truck will run fine at night for hours but run it at 4-6pm and after 30 minutes it starts dieing at stoplights and such. Figured it had to be something outside the engine bay that was temp dependent.

Checked the fuel pressure and I am seeing 25 psi off the schrader valve. Pulled the bed and checked directly off the pump and I see the same pressure.

What do I need to buy? Looking at rockauto/amazon or local (advance, autozone or oreilly) and I can buy just a pump or I can buy the entire assembly. How easy is just the pump vs the entire assembly and which kits do I want to get for the closest to factory setup? I think I can wait a few days for one to come in from online because I am broke at the moment.

You can get just the pump and install it into the current 'sender' assembly. The pump kit, if you get one, should come with a new 'sock', a length of fuel line, a couple clamps, and a new O-ring.
Once you have removed the sender, replacing the pump is relatively simple. Remove the existing clamps, the fuel line(you can cut if you want), and then work the pump out of the sender brackets/rubbery pocket. You'll have to pull the 'shoe' filter from the bottom before you can get the pump out.
Work the new pump into the bracketry, measure the fuel line and cut to fit, slid the clamps onto the sender and pump outlet, work the fuel line onto the output of the pump and the metal line of the sender. Slide clamps in place, tighten. The shoe filter will have to be worked onto the inlet side of the pump.
You can choose any brand on the market. I cannot say who is good or bad. If you want OEM, it will cost a bit more. Brand names, such as Walbro and Bosch and others should have good pumps. At least moving the bed out of the way is easy compared to dropping a tank. IMO. X2. My old car is on its 3rd pump, and the tank drop was a PITA. Could not move the vehicle, and it was in dirt, leaves, dead things, etc. Rained, too. Sliding under with jackstands is not fun. Raising & lowering not fun, but was easier when the tank was empty(close). Had almost 10 gallons(8x lb) on removal. Ugh. So bed is a lot more accessible.

Well got the new pump in and saw ~70psi as opposed to 20-25 before. Went with a carquest pump and strainer for just under $100 locally. I did not feel like I could do without it for one to come in.

Feels like it has more power now. I did not realize how much power this engine actually had. Between replacing the spark plugs a couple weeks ago and now the pump it is running way more responsive.
