Re: 2001 2.5L fuel pump issues.
You can get just the pump and install it into the current 'sender' assembly. The pump kit, if you get one, should come with a new 'sock', a length of fuel line, a couple clamps, and a new O-ring.
Once you have removed the sender, replacing the pump is relatively simple. Remove the existing clamps, the fuel line(you can cut if you want), and then work the pump out of the sender brackets/rubbery pocket. You'll have to pull the 'shoe' filter from the bottom before you can get the pump out.
Work the new pump into the bracketry, measure the fuel line and cut to fit, slid the clamps onto the sender and pump outlet, work the fuel line onto the output of the pump and the metal line of the sender. Slide clamps in place, tighten. The shoe filter will have to be worked onto the inlet side of the pump.
You can choose any brand on the market. I cannot say who is good or bad. If you want OEM, it will cost a bit more. Brand names, such as Walbro and Bosch and others should have good pumps. At least moving the bed out of the way is easy compared to dropping a tank. IMO. X2. My old car is on its 3rd pump, and the tank drop was a PITA. Could not move the vehicle, and it was in dirt, leaves, dead things, etc. Rained, too. Sliding under with jackstands is not fun. Raising & lowering not fun, but was easier when the tank was empty(close). Had almost 10 gallons(8x lb) on removal. Ugh. So bed is a lot more accessible.
