Default How to remove crank gear from 2.3 and 2.5 Lima engines

Hello everyone! I recently needed to remove my crank gear to gain access to the front seal and timing cover. When it came time to take the gear off I was not lucky enough to have mine slide off or be massaged off by prying. So now what do I do, I research and find there is a specific tool required to pull the little SOB off the crank (T74P-6303-A or 303-099). The problem with that little jewel is the cost of it is ridiculous and tie that to the rarity of being able to find one right when you need it. Now what do I do….I get innovative. I made a tool that worked to pull the gear off the crank (after I had to reweld it when it broke, lol). I literally made this with stuff laying around the shop. I took 2.5" stainless exhaust tubing and cut that down to enough length to cover the sprocket and nose of the crank plus a little extra. Then took plate steel and cut it into a rough oval shape and found the center and drilled and tapped a hole for a bolt. Welded that plate steel to the tubing and then cut small slits on the opposite end of the tubing so they would act as fingers after I bent them inward a little. I cut one slit length wise on the tubing so it would flex open a little. Then I pirated the hose clamp from the throttle body end of the intake hose to wrap around the tubing after it wrapped around the crank sprocket. With the "fingers" on the back side of the crank and the tension from the hose clamp, all it took was running the bolt in (I did put a smaller bolt in the crank nose to press against but it maxed out and I needed to move on the crank bolt to keep working the sprocket off with the tool). If I wasn't in a hurry and took a little more time with the specs it would have been as pretty as it was functional. I rarely post on this board but do read a lot and wanted to contribute something that may hold value for others. If anyone has questions please feel free to contact me. -Jeremy-
