Default massive fluid leak.

So I did a dumb thing... I put water in the radiator over the summer because I was leaking a lot of fluid and am lazy and didn't track down the leak...well now its winter and a month or so ago it got REAL cold in MD... went to use my poor abused and neglected ranger and it started overheating... stopped to put more water in and the water came right back out... seems like the back where it meets the transmission... I fear a crack in the block... could it be anything else?I am hoping to crawl under and look this week end....

Default massive fluid leak.

The engine head could be rotten, or a blown head gasket. Possibly a broken coolant line I believe that engine circulates coolant through the intake manifold.

^^ or it could be a popped out freeze plug. That would be less expensive. You could fix that with an expandable plug

You really have to locate the leak before determining if it is permanent damage, or just a problem. There was a small hose that was T'd into the heater hose, looped around the rear of the head, and connected to the intake manifold which could be leaking.
Using water as a coolant will promote rust, and 'freeze plugs' rust out from the inside.
If you are lucky, one rusted out, or got pushed out by ice. If not, cast iron parts may be cracked.
If fluid is coming out from inside the bell housing, you'll have to pull the transmission to determine if a freeze plug failed on the back of the block.
You have to look...
