Default Type F atf

Does anyone know the difference between Mercon V and type F atf. I've tried everything I know to quieten my power steering pump. I was told type F might help.

Type F was used in Ford transmissions while Dexron was used in GM. I doubt it will have any effect on power steering pump noise. I assume you have a whining pump, in most cases caused by running the pump without fluid. There's no cure, but the noise may be mitigated by disassembling the pump, cleaning, and moving the 'slippers' around arbitrarily. The inner surface of the pump body gets scored, the slippers(actually rollers of a sort) also get scored, and the noise results from leakage past the scoring (I think).
If you take it apart, and move the slippers around, you can sometimes make the noise less noticeable. I think this happens because the wear patterns are disturbed.
An alternative is to buy a re-man or boneyard pump. The former should be quiet, the latter a game of chance.
The fluid should make little difference.
If whines are not the complaint, please make a note.

keeping fresh merc V in mine has shown to help - plus i can tell it's easier to turn since i started doing this. i routinely use a turkey baster to pull out what i can reach and top off with new fluid.
this winter i was contemplating using a tid bit of LS additive, it's reportedly used by ford techs in some applications where ATF is used.

Ranger power steering pumps whining to a certain degree is considered normal.
