Default Intermittent Cruise Control

How do I troubleshoot issues with my cruise control on 2000 Ford Ranger XLT a 2.54 cylinder? I can press the send button while running at highway speed it'll come on and then go off it doesn't always come on when I push the button it's intermittent depending on how I adjust the lever that it's mounted on which is behind the turn signal switch on the steering column..

I'd replace the pods. They are not that expensive and not hard to do.

"Lever" that it's mounted on confuses me a bit. A stock system should be buttons mounted on either side of the steering wheel.

On my 2002 in alldata there is a section that shows how to put the system in self check mode where it helps you diagnose the problem step by step.

If the controls are not on the steering wheel hub, then it is an aftermarket system.

If wiggling the wires makes it stop working, then you likely have a wire that has started to fail. Regular motion, back and forth, can make a wire become brittle, grow weak, and fracture. The switch could also be failing.

I'm not sure what you mean by steering wheel hub? This (Mechanism) is on a what looks like a tilt steering wheel lever located in the same place between the turn signal switch and the dashboard on the left side of steering column and its movement is very puzzling and what I mean by that is you can pull it forward towards The turn signal switch push it back or forward or fold it up towards the roof of the car it can be pushed down towards the floor of the car it literally has movement and motion in any and all directions almost like you can fold it up but the movement doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason. All that being said would you suppose it is an aftermarket cruise control??

That's a control for the old Audiovox/Rostra CCS100 cruise control systems. 250-3421.

It's an aftermarket system. Both companies sold it at different times under the same CCS100 part number. Several control modules were available, yours is part number 250-3421.

Yeah I googled it and found out what you were talking about. Any clue as to troubleshooting it..? One more question regarding front bumpers, I've got my hands on an 2002 ranger front bumper will it fit my 2000 XLT..?

I have installed several different versions of add-on cruise controls. Things to check with an aftermarket cruise:
Brake switch to de-activate the cruise when pressing the brake
magnets on the drive shaft
pickup coil mounted to sense the magnets passing when in motion
servo vacuum supply
cable to throttle
possible spark sensor - cuts the cruise if you were to step on the clutch and prevents engine rpm spiking
bad control wiring
bad power to the servo

Thank you very much for ur suggestions. You listed a few that I was unaware of that being said I tore it all apart yesterday evening and was unable to find the culprit.. I've inspected all of the wiring and was still unable to find the problem.. Do have one question regarding the vacuum device that is attached.. How strong does the vacuum need to be..? Better yet how much vacuum does the cruise need to function properly..? I'm thinking that is probably the issue.. the vacuum line that serves the cruise has about 7 other lines connected to it as well as the cruise.. any suggestion would be greatly appreciated..? Thank you in advance...

If you are concerned you don't have enough strong vacuum, you can add a vacuum reservoir and a check valve that will 'keep' the vacuum in the reservoir intact when the vacuum drops in the intake manifold. You can re-use one from a junked/wrecked vehicle, just need the reservoir, some tubing, and a check valve. Tee in the cruise to the reservoir line, 'behind' the check valve, with the check valve other end connected to manifold vacuum. Once you get vacuum in the reservoir, it will/should stay except for that used to position the diaphragm/cable actuator.
In most cases of vacuum lack, the cruise will engage, hold on level ground, and then slowly ease off when the vacuum drops, such as while climbing a hill. The speed may drop, and the cruise disengage due to lack of vacuum or speed dropping below the 'number' it needs to function(pulses from the drivetrain).
