I was half kidding on the TSLA, and me too, that's one I won't own at this time nor would I buy his 5.5% junk bonds. This, when and as an example, a person can buy Ford stock and collect 5.6% divs or GM and collect 4.4%. I've taken a huge amount of my winnings and put them aside in the last six weeks, IMO, were due for a correction. My guesstimate on that is 5-15% and withing the next 12 months, but before the year is out is on the tip nf my tongue. Auto industry is pretty beaten down right now and I'm seeing several great opportunities to buy at great prices. The other area of interest and being watched is the new industry in America (and maybe Canada) and that one is.....weed, and opportunities related to it that haven't quite came to market. Yet.

Strange jetstream and winds, usually anything coming this way from Canada means cooler weather, but not with all that smoke, this around it's smokey and temps are close to 100* almost every day. I'm with you, it's gonna be real nice seeing blue in a few days.

I've been with TSLA basically since the beginning. I'm a member of the cult. I think Elon is going to pull it off. IMHO. If you can build a Level 5 Model 3 for 43k within 5 years then the race is over. My friend is scheduled to get his Model 3 possibly as soon as November. I'll report back with a review!

I like the investment world as so some of my friends, and as such we naturally talk about TSLA and the entire picture of the company (Space X, the next gen battery, whatever), not just the car. And of course, a few days ago we were talking about Musk issuing $1.5B in junk bonds so he could generate the cash needed to build the cars he's taken deposits on. So when it comes to investments I like to ask people (or answer to others why I own something), "why do you own this", and the answer should be able to be presented in under 60 seconds in words that a kid in HS can understand, and saying "it's going to make money" is in itself, not the correct answer. Care to shed insight and oh, when did you buy in (price may/prob will affect answer)? Curious; I've been wanting to ask this since the subject came up earlier and because nobody I now bought in directly (but could be embedded in a MF or an ETF).

Members who read this "how not to debacle" thread I have a suggestion. Go get yourself a code reader and a multimeter. You can download Torque for free and buy an Elm obd bluetooth adapter for $10. Then you have a code reader. A MM can be had at Harbor freight for $5. A gas pressure gauge can be had at HF for $20. That's Handy too. Buy these before you have an issue.

Now post your issue on a thread and be extra nice to people.

I bought mostly in the spring and summer of 2013. I sold some off. Mostly playing with house money now. I'll never sell any more. I'm in the cult. I believe down the road we'll be livig in our house with Tesla tiles on the roof, Tesla powerwalls in the basement. Watching TV from our space X internet and our model 3 will be driving me around while I sip a cold one in the back seat.

Question for you? If Tesla is selling a Level 5 autonomous car for 43k in less than 5 years what do you think will happen?

Cars are going Autonomous and an electric vehicle is more compatible for this then ICE. Europe has legislation that kicks in by 2025 that virtually eliminates any vehicle with just an ICE. It will get to a point someday where insurance might cost more if you're driving the car. My .02

The more homogeneous your traffic mix, the better it flows. The problem with self-directed vehicles is the handling of other drivers who won't play nice. The electronics and program might get buffaloed by a driver who is overly aggressive.
Until the 'mix' has a method of handling those kind of drivers, there'll be problems. Add in the question posed by a possible quandry: "Do I run over Aunt Mabel in the crosswalk, (she should have paid attention to the WALK sign, dammit) or do I crash the vehicle into a lake, spike, whatever is not good for the passenger/ 'driver'?"
I do not have an answer. Similarly for 18wheelers, they may cross Nebraska with little difficulty, but when they have to back up to the loading dock, or maneuver through Manhattan(NY, not KS), problems might arise. I think total 'self driving' vehicle mix is quite a ways off.
From what I understand, E. Musk knows how to work the ropes in DC. Wonder if he'll close the Fremont plant - former Ford/GM/NUMMI? I don't remember exactly, but did walk through the plant that was making Pintos in 1971-72, I think. It may be gone. He did build his battery plant in NV, so CA may lose Tesla assembly, or not. I dunno.

I think level 5 autonomous vehicles will be in here in <5 years. They don't have to be perfect, just better than humans.

I think the Freemont plant has always been GM or Toyota until Tesla.

Sorry I missed this until now, my bad.

That is an excellent question and one I've been grappling over (and can't really nail down as it can go several ways) how much the public really wants a self driving car to begin with, without regard to who makes it nor the cost of the vehicle. Is the industry pursuing something that the general public doesn't really want in the first place, would the vehicle be ahead of it's time (sorta goes back to what I just said), or would it be something new and once in the publics hands, perception would change and acceptance would increase? IMO at this time, I see more value and potential for a self driving car in business and fleet use than in the publics hands. Like you mentioned about being in the backseat of a self driving car downing beers, I've joked about that one too, lol. But right now, today, we can do that, it's called UBER, and people need not own the car, and the cost of the service is cheap. On the flipside, here comes the possibility of the self driving taxi to chauffeur people like me who don't want to own a self driving car nor would pay extra for the feature, but would hail a driverless car to take me to/from a drinking adventure. Overall and somewhat as a joke, this is just one example, there are many more incluing cases where people replace car ownership with a self driving car rental, be it per use or a subscription to a service (or???). IMO, now it gets back to public perception and acceptance, and value and usage, and right now, I can't get a good solid pulse on what the masses are thinking. And this does, IMO, create investment opportunity.

Sidenote....auto industry is in a downturn and being ignored by investors. Me looks at the companies, who they are and what they do, the numbers, and I see great companies selling for bargain prices. Wished this market correction would hurry up, start and take hold.

I read Tony Seba's book "clean disruption" (it's a snoozefest but I powered through it). Tony is an over the top cult member but he gives good insight on how all this might effect society. Tony thinks used ICE cars will plummet in value in the not so distant future.

I for one think most people are going to want at least one level 5 car in the household. Time will tell.

Trying to wrap my head around it all and there is a LOT of "all"; thoughts I've identified as I try to sort through it from the investment perspective (list is not complete either and is not zeroing in solely a self driving car):

*gas/hybrid/pure electric and consumer demand

*Range anxiety/uncertainty of charge location/facility and if a spot would be available when you want it to be/gas up and go in the pure gas or hybrid

*Buyers as a whole right now show a strong preference for buying trucks, SUV's and station wagons. Cars, sedans are not really in favor at this time.

*CAFE

*Global warming

*Nasty, toxic chemical waste created in the production of solar panels

*Battery recycling

Lots of ways to play this one (thinking just cars), TSLA included, even though at this time I wouldn't touch it due to the current valuation and climate. IMO, TSLA might be a one-stop auto solution in that if all goes as planned, Musk will deliver the cars, the next gen of battery, and *probably* push to develop and build the infrastructure. However.....GM not only has a competitor to the model 3, but also has a hybrid and gas only. There is Ford, with the hybrid and gas only (the F-150, now and future is a conversation alllllll of it's own) and a new CEO which raises concerns. Then there are two oriental brands, both with gas and one with a hybrid and the other with pure electric and as much as I'd never own one, I'll take my share of profits from those who do. So there's car options, even though others are out there. Another way to play and sorta in the TSLA direction would be to go with a company I've flipped twice, that company is Tenneco (TEN). The reason and potential benefit for this play is that Tenneco is a major vendor to nearly all automakers, thus when the industry does rebound TEN stands to win. Again. There are others too, these are ones I'm familiar with, have (do) owned, and are considering buying more at the next market correction.

So I've rattled off a few things that come to mind in the big blur of investing in the auto industry, feel free to inject. This would be a great topic at the bar as it would surely go on for a long time, so much on the table to consider!

Edit: I wonder where big oil fits into all this, lol. IMO, they themselves don't even know.

Check Ford's product line again. They have or had a pure electric Fusion(?) based model, in addition to the petro & hybrid models. FWIW.

I'm not a member of the cult because of the global warming religion. As of now I don't believe in man made global warming.

The Tesla apps will tell you how long the wait is at the next charging station. You'll plan accordingly. It will become pretty painless.

I fully believe that when level 5 cars are available people will adapt quickly. When my M3 drives to my friends house those friends will be in the cult. People will want one for their aging parents, etc. It can't be stopped, it's coming and I think Tesla will be the leader. I'm not going to buy some crappy product from Ford or GM that they just slapped together because they were forced by the government to build.

The M3 might be the next Corolla or Model T.

For the most part the ford, etal have electric cars because they are forced to. I don't want to buy a car from a company that is only building it because they are mandated to. It's never go to be as good as a car from an innovator like Tesla.

I've owned for a month now
PROBLEM:
Engine hesitation on take off
Very low power when driving
Must floor it 95% of the time
HISTORY/INFO:
Got the car last month , when I bought her she had a bad bog down issue that would make it dang near impossible to drive anywhere on the actual road ways. (Still did it anyways) drove her an hour home. Randomly bogging down while holding consistent throttle, could barely take off and would get random moment I couldn't accelerate to save my life.
Coolant temp doesn't seem to work... but it moves from below cold to on the cold line after driving a while
THINGS IVE DONE:

Previous owner replaced
New coil packs
New plugs
New maf sensor
Changed throttle body (used)
Changed intake manifold (used)

Replaced fuel filter
Drained the tank
Replaced the tps
Cleaned out the throttle body
Cleaned the intake manifold
Cleaned the maf
Put new calipers and brakes on the front
Cut the catalytic converter off and replaced with pipe

Checked all the voltage on sensors tps /maf /egr
(Here's where things got weird)
My 12v constant reads 14v (maybe a wiring issue/but I know the alternator puts out 14v while charging)
I was testing out my voltage for my maf sensor
Had the positive probe in the 12v constant hole
And the negative probe in the signal wire hole
And turned it to 20k on the ohm setting
And the truck immediately started idling better
I've been driving it with the multimeter hooked up still and cut on because it's my work truck , since then I have tried a different maf I got from the junk yard. Still has the same issue unless I cut the multimeter into 20k ohms . The truck idles better and doesn't bog down like it did when I purchased it. But I still have no power ! Esp during take off I have to floor it and then clutch and let off to take off. And she still wants to die on her face. Once she's going on the highway about 45-50 I can be in third and get what I believe is normal power but then shift into fourth and unless I'm all the way tached out In third. I can floor it in fourth and will actually start going slower.
The truck seems to reach high rpms but it doesn't go as fast as the truck sounds.
When driving I hear a whirling sound that sounds like the tires running on the road but it stops when I let off the pedal. I tried a different egr sensor as well. Also from the junk yard and it seemed to do worse then the one that came on there. So any one have some advice for me ? Sorry for long post. I just wanted to give as much info as possible.

Also it's hard to get her started takes usually 2 cranks and she barely turns over and idles really rough until you let off the clutch then the battery meter jumps up and the car idles "normal"

----------

Obviously getting terrible gas mileage with this as well, and most of my dash lights are burnt out so my check engine light doesn't work. Currently working on getting that taken care of this weekend so maybe I can check what codes I got throwing around

Ok since I'm bored and found my way back here ill take a crack at the multimeter thingy. The maf sensor is bad buy a new one not one from a junk yard.
