Default Duratec Oil Filter: FL-910S or FL-400s?

Ford used to recommend the FL-400S for the 2.3 Duratec, now they recommend the FL-910S, which is a smaller filter. Any reason why they switched? Since they still make the larger 400S, any reason not to use it?

Thanks,
Regan

I have no idea why Ford is recommending the Fl-910s over the FL-400s

Perhaps they are going to phase out the FL-400s to save money on production cost since the Fl-900s will work with a greater number of vehicles.

From what I can see the FL-400s is a better filter and is what I would use if I wanted to stay with Motorcraft

This being said I have found no documentation on why Ford made the change in recommendation.

Perhaps your question should be asked to a knowledgeable person at Ford.

From a another forum

FL-400S Specifications:
Thread Inside Diameter (in.): 3/4"-16
Outside Diameter Top (in.): 2.98"
Outside Diameter Bottom (in.): 2.98"
Length (in.): 4.14"
Spin-On Filter: Yes
Bypass Valve: YES
Color: White
Burst Pressure (PSI): 250 psi
Pressure Relief Valve: YES
PSI Relief: 20 PSI
Micron Rating: 80%@20um
Height (in.): 4.14"
Seal Outside Diameter (in.): 2.75"
Seal Inside Diameter (in.): 2.40"
Anti-drainback Valve: YES

FL-910S Specifcations:
Thread Inside Diameter (in.):3/4"-16
Outside Diameter Top (in.):3.15"
Outside Diameter Bottom (in.):3.15"
Length (in.): 3.36"
Spin-On Filter:Yes
Bypass Valve:YES
Color:White
Burst Pressure (PSI): 250 PSI
Pressure Relief Valve:YES
PSI Relief:14.5 PSI
Micron Rating:50%@35um
Height (in.):3.36"
Seal Outside Diameter (in.): 2.75"
Seal Inside Diameter (in.): 2.40"
Anti-drainback Valve:YES .

In theory the 910 will filter down to 35 micron efficiently 50% of the time where the the 400 will filter to 25 micron 80% of the time. And look at the bypass pressure, the 910 is lower than the 400, meaning in theory more oil could flow around the media if the pressure exceed the bypass valve rating. Not sure what the oil pressure in the FiST is but the 910 is the stock one.

So is the 400 worse? Well not based on the numbers I found (if they are correct). Is the 910 a lower/bad quality filter, very unlikely. So I can save some bucks and use the FL-400S. I may chat with the parts guy tomorrow as the Edge is in for some warranty work.

I know this is trivial but fun to figure out.

Yet another link to another forum that shows a cut away of both filters.

I've been using these for years:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1

Can not beat the price honestly. I use them on my wife's Toyota Solara since it's the same threads as well. I will take a longer filter over the smaller 910 any day...

Thanks for the help, guys, I appreciate your replies!

EAOutlaw, thanks for the specifics and the link to further information. Knowledge is power, but I especially like knowing all those fine details when I'm interested in something!

Nigel, your link takes me to a rear window louver. I'm curious what oil filter you're using?

Thanks again, hope y'all have a great Fourth!

K&N H-1002. Screw the Ford, Fram and Wix filters.

Thanks, Tyler. That part number doesn't appear to match anything. HP-1002, maybe? Unfortunately, I'm no fan of K&N filters; I've seen way too many of their oiled air filters wreck engines by letting a lot of crap in along with all the extra air they claim. Not arguing at all, just saying I understand how strong opinions make folks swear off certain products just like you have. I do appreciate your reply, though!

I'm an idiot...lol
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1

Fixed the link as well.

I used to use purolotor p1's but then when amazon started jacking the price up to $9+ per filter it wasn't worth it to me. I then have been using the FL-400s. Been using them for a couple years now so far so good! No issues what so ever. For under $3 per filter it's awesome.

Thanks, Nigel. I think you and I have the same computer skills - I'm always managing to do stuff like that! Amazon had those 400s for $2.99 last week, and I ordered a batch of them. Now they're $3.69. Still not a bad price - they are well over $5 locally but even at that I think they are a good deal. The information y'all have posted makes me feel even better about them.

Thanks, guys!

Yep I'm annoyed I had 5 in my cart and was going to buy them but since they are add ons I was waiting to add something else to the cart. Sure enough I just checked and you are right they are $3.69. Not a huge difference but sometimes amazon pricing is annoying on how much the stuff changes.

I will add too that I use this same filter on my wife's Toyota solara. No issues there other than they thought it was smart to put the oil filter in the middle front of the engine so you are guaranteed to have oil everywhere when removing it...
