Arrow How long does a coil pack last?

Probably a dumb question but how long do they actually last?

The one on my truck is OEM from the factory... 2001 w/ 183k miles on it and climbing.

I've changed spark plugs and wires in the past and going to be changing plugs again this weekend which made me think about the coil pack.

No stumbles or anything like that. Do they just die or do they progressively stop working?

I'm all for preventative stuff so if they are supposed to be changed at X mileage or age then that's cool too.

Thanks,
-Nigel

As far as how long they will last, depends on how high the resistance is through the wires and plugs.

How long it has run with high resistance will effect the longevity.

Extreme temperatures can shorten the life of coils as well.

With a well maintained ignition system in the ideal environment, a modern coil pack could potentially out last your truck.

I have only seen coils fail from poor preventive maintenance , and poor factory placement.

The OEM Coil on your truck lasted a long time so far, if you replace it buy a OEM part for the replacement.

At this point, you've gotten 16 years out of it.. Even if you're the 3rd owner i'd say you got your monies worth. Pick up an extra one if you have money burning a hole in your pocket and then if it goes bad one day, cuz its electronics, then you're prepared.

I had one fail, an E-coil on my Ranger. Just wouldn't start. I was 'shocked' (get the pun?), as I had never ever figured a coil to fail without at least causing misfire or other symptom, such as hard starting or ??? I was so sure it was something else that I changed the pickup inside the distributor. No help. Finally checked the coil, and it had gone to coil heaven. A new coil, and all has been well since. About 25 years ago.
Translated: If you buy a coil now, and carry it around as a spare, by the time you need and use it, there may be a lot of damage from rolling around behind the seat, or underneath. I do not carry a spare, nor do I plan on doing so.

I had an issue with mine around 100k. Can't remember exactly what it was doing, but I think it was arcing or something whenever it rained. It had a visible crack in the side, so I replaced it with a new one from Motorcraft and it's been fine ever since.

There isn't really a set age/mileage. Some people go 200k on OEM coils, some fail much sooner. My truck has over 187k on the originals and I recently replaced them both due to one of them not firing at #1 tower. I ended up doing plugs/wires as well. Stick w/ Motorcraft when it comes to anything ignition related.

Yep definitely would stick with the motorcraft one. They are cheap at only $60 new so cost isn't a huge deal.

I just changed my spark plugs last weekend but noticed that my 4th cylinder plug was significantly worn compared to the others. The electrode was almost done when measured it was .075 compared to the others which were not nearly that worn. They did have 60k miles on them so it was time to change them. ... it was weird actually. Not sure why that one cylinder plug was so worn?

I have used Echlin ignition parts, from NAPA, I think, with good success.

Motorcraft makes good parts, but they are real proud of them, and value them somewhat above what I think they are worth - in SOME instances.
I would have to compare their cost/value to determine if I would insist on OEM or not.

Everyone once in a while when I go to start the truck it stumbles for just about 2-3 seconds and or I will crank it and it won't turn over. This is very rare. It's done it for years now for some reason..lol

But I ordered new plugs and a new ignition coil. They were cheap. $52 for OEM Motorcraft coil and $20 for oem Motorcraft wires. I just changed the plugs which had 50k miles on them and the 4th cylinder plug was very very worn. More worn than any of the other plugs. Figure the above is cheap so just replace then I won't have to worry about that going forward. Not sure if I am always going to replace the wires though, the Motocrcraft oem ones I have now were replaced back 60k miles ago but they still look brand new now. But again it's only 20 bucks.

Should have the stuff tomorrow. Love rockauto. I remember the first time I changed out plugs and wires. The dealer charged me something like $70 for plugs and wires...ouch! Never again.

My 2010 with 90,000 miles started to have a miss sometimes. Finally threw a code and one of the things was the coil. Got a motorcraft coil, wires and plugs from rockauto and that fixed that. It was recommended on here to ONLY use a Ford coil. Good advice.

As it sits right now I still have the factory coil packs on my '97. Just turned 280K miles yesterday. It is time for new plugs and wires though but the coil packs seem fine.
