Default Fuel system questions

Sorry if it's already been answered in abother thread. OK so I have found out my fuel arm leaks. I have a replacement but before I start to replace it my gas gauge doesn't work iv heard a few different things to change. But not a huge budget does anyone know what I should start with iv heard the ground, sending unit, float, fuel pump. I'd just hate to be a few hundred in when it could of just been a 20$ fix or something thanks for the advice iv already gotten from yall.

Could it be the sending unit float arm? That is made of narrow gauge steel rod, and could be bent by manhandling during installation. In that case, the bed could be removed, the sending unit & pump assembly pulled, and the arm bent back into proper position to allow the float & fuel gauge to possibly regain function.
If the gas gauge wire at the sending is grounded with the key ON, the gauge should go to full. If the gauge doesn't read, that is a test of the sending unit. If the gauge doesn't move, ever, it is likely that the voltage regulator on the backside of the instrument cluster is not producing the 7-ish volts to run the gauge(s), or the connector to the cluster is loose, or a fuse opened. Even the actual ignition switch on top of the steering column could be failing.

well like any problem you should try to keep it simple if possible.

use a computer safe test light and test each fuse, in the cab and under the hood.

verify with the owners manual that each spot for a fuse has a fuse of the right amperage.

some people will remove a fuse from a non critical circuit to power up a critical circuit in an emergency.

I am not saying that is what happened yet it is worth checking the fuses.

once you know all the fuses are good, you will have to find the signal wire from the sending unit that goes to the gauge and ground it to see if the fuel gauge reads full.

to do this you will need to find a wiring diagram that covers your year truck,

perhaps someone here may be able to help with this, if not you can sign up to alldata diy and they will have all the information even trouble shooting for your truck

Thanks for the answers guys and thanksee for the videos. Very helpful. I'll give these a try. And yeah I'm kinda bad at correct names and how important it is. I blame the souths education system for an excuse lol.
