Cool Ecm mystery - please solve

My 89 Ranger was a sudden no start. Engine turns over, but will not even try to start. I had a couple friends push start me and the truck started and ran normal until I cut it off and then no start again.

Mechanic said it might be the ECM. I brought the mechanic a ECM for an 95 automatic ranger I had laying around and the truck started right up but stalls at a stop and runs rough. I then went to the parts store and got the same model ECM for an 89 standard that had been in the truck for years and the truck turns over but won't start. I have tried 3 ECMs designed for an 89 Ranger and none start the truck but the 95 ECM for an automatic starts it up and it runs as I said.

The mechanic is baffled. Please tell me what may be causing the wrong ECM (for a 95) to start the truck but the right ECM (for an 89) will not.
