Default PCV canister on side of crankcase HELP

Hello have a question regarding my 85 2.3 Ranger.
On the side of the motor, below the intake manifold is a/the pcv.... port. Plugged in is a tin canister with the PC valve between a hose that runs back into intake manifold.
I'm in understanding of its purpose, my concern is I was looking over the engine bay after buying this neglected truck. And saw the tin canister just laying there with the hoses disconnected. As well as a straight sight into the block.... I was able to press it all back together the way it belong but what keeps it in place...? The canister seems like it would bounce out or possibley blown out.... I d found no information so far.

Thanks for any replays or suggestions

**picter from internet. But canister is what I'm talking about

The canister is 'jammed' into the side of the block. To my knowledge there's no fastener holding it. The dipstick tube is also jammed in place. I think there is a tool that fits around the tube where the ridge is, and pushes on the ridge. I used an adjustable wrench when I have had to thump them back in place. I think the canister fits the same way.
The flow is from the crankcase, through the canister, through the tube, through the embedded PCV valve, through the tube to the bottom of the upper intake(on mine) where it is ingested into the intake & burned. The filtered air comes from the large air feed tube right before the throttle plate, through the small ribbed tube, into the cam cover, and through the crankcase to the canister.'
The canister is actually an oil separator, trapping droplets before they get sucked into the intake, and draining them back to the crankcase. I think it is filled with metal shavings that trap drops that can't make the sharp turns without running into the shavings.

Sweet... since I posted this I've done more diggin, searching other key words and others confirm it's just pressed in. So weird engineering on fords part, but when I put everything back together I'll press it in with some silocone gasket. It'll ease my paranoia of it backing out.

Other also said they went as far as taping the hole and creating their own lines with catch cans and such.

Thanks for the reply

About 99.9993% of owners never give the canister a thought. The only time is when they have stripped a block, hot-tanked it, and are putting it back together. Or, they get a re-man that didn't come with a new separator and there is a need to swap the old to the re-man block.
If you need to, such as the case where the canister is a loose fit, you can 'roughen' the canister outer diameter using large water pump pliers or vice-grip pliers, creating grooves and ridges. The ridges will 'take up the slack' and make the canister fit tighter into the hole in the block. In that case, I'd use some gasket maker or RTV to seal the bore, and prevent seepage. I think tape will generally get soaked by oil vapors and lose its adhesive properties, but haven't tried any such method.
