Default 2004 ford ranger 2.3l starting without transmission

Ok so I have a 2004 ford ranger 2.3l and long story short it got a knock in the motor. So I'm looking for a replacement motor. I have found a motor that just might be a bit of a steal. The guy wants 200 if I come and pull it(down from 400, said he's tired of looking at it and not doing anything with it). He told me that it runs just fine but I want to see it myself. So comes the question there is no transmission on the truck is there any way I can get the motor to turnover without having to install a transmission. I know that the starter bolts on to the bell housing so I was thinking there might be a way to just put a flywheel on and have a separate mount for the starter without to much fabrication. taking out the tranny in my truck anyways cause I have taught 6 people how to drive standard on the current clutch so time for a replacement . I just don't want to have to mount the tranny and take it out twice if I don't have to( I can be a lil lazy at times XD). Sorry for the newb question here just again would rather not have to try and install a tranny in some guys yard for a motor that might not even turn over...

If you just want to see if the motor will spin, put a ratchet or breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt at the front of the motor and start turning.

I think a ratchet would work that's what we done while doing the timin on my friends 96(head was cracked fun). Thank you! I will update whenever I see it turnover which will probably be next week sometime

The alternative, if you want to run the engine, is to install a bell housing and flywheel. Then you can mount the starter, and it will engage with the ring gear on the fly.

You only need a set of jumper cables to make the starter work if it has the 'bump' rather than a solenoid. Old motorcraft starters didn't have an external relay/solenoid to engage the Bendix drive gear.

So I figured out the whole starter thing and checked it out yesterday and when we got everything figured out(was jumping the starter solenoid a lil wrong) the motor started right up and ran fine other than at start was seeming like it was going to die at idle(I figured that was because this was the first time the motor had been started in about half a year) ima go back and put actual decent gas in it(there was water in the fuel tank and we had poured most out but had nothing to really dry it out so white smoke was pouring out the tail pipe) as to see if the white smoke stops(if not headgasket?)
