Default Surging

My 2000 2.5l 5 speed Ranger started surging like crazy. A friend suggested disconnecting the IAC to see if that eliminated the surging, and it did, although the engine would no longer idle. So I replaced the IAC and the problem remained. When I start the engine I have to hold the throttle slightly open and then the engine surges to 2500 to 3000 rpm and then drops suddenly to the slightly open throttle level. It then immediately surges again, etc. It does the same thing if I attempt to drive it, which makes for a VERY rough ride. Again, disconnecting the IAC gets rid of the surging.

Any ideas?

Check engine light on?

Have you took it to Auto Zone & had them scan it for error codes? (it's free)

Snowball, there's no check engine light. Will the computer record codes if there's no check engine light?

Hmmm... try cleaning you Mass Air Flow sensor? Parts stores sell a cleaner specifically for them. Worth a shot...

After cleaning the MAF meter, the IAT sensor and checking out the values for the TPS, as well as replacing the IAC valve, we discovered the battery was failing. A new battery cured the problem! Duh!

Bob P.

I'll have to try and remember that. I typically don't let a battery go past 7 years old though, so i haven't experienced this.
