Default external fuel pump overheating

i have 1998 ranger 2.5l 5spd. its bagged. i just installed a new RCI fuel cell and summit racing brand electric external fuel pump. the fuel pump's specs are 85ps and 43 gph. the truck cranks with the fuel pump on and runs fine for a few minutes. but after about 5 minutes or so the fuel pump becomes too hot to touch and then quiets down and stops sending the truck enough fuel and it sputters out and dies. so any ideas what could be causing it to overheat? the same wiring from the old fuel cell and fuel pump were used to wire the new one.
