Default 1992 2.3L will crank but not start but will push start

Ok so my brother has a 92 Ranger 2.3L 5 speed and about a month ago it suddenly would not start. I go over to help tow it to Pep Boys and on a whim we try to push start it and it fires right up we take it to Pep Boys. They say it is the ignition module and then let it sit for almost 3 weeks and say they can't find the part. Anyway we tow it home and before we get the ignition module I wanted to run this by people to see if anyone has any thoughts on this problem.

Does it crank at all? Crank slowly?

Battery Good?

I knew a guy that had a bad starter in his Mustang and he went 2 years before replacing it. Just kept parking on hills....lol

If it cranks ok, my guess would be the solenoid, not letting 12 volts go to the coil while cranking.

Sorry I thought I put in the original post that it will crank with the key but all it does is turn over like usual but just won't fire. With key in the on position it will push start. Tried to bypass the key start in case that was part of the problem, meaning I turned key to on position and then jumped a wire straight from battery to the starter solenoid on the fender and it cranks but no start. Guess I can check the voltage at the coil but if it push starts it has to be getting enough voltage to fire with key in the on position.

Maybe the Ignition switch ? The other part is called the ICM ignition control module. The screws that hold the ICM in place are grounds. Remove and clean them. If that does not work I would replace the ignition switch. The ignition switch is in the steering column under the bottom cover. Cheap and easy to replace. If it's still not running replace the ICM.

Pep Boys said it was the ignition module but I don't really trust this particular one. I was cleaning out my garage and happened to come across an ignition switch. Gonna try that this weekend and see if it will work. Thanks for the idea because I thought about that and then got side tracked into thinking about the module.

There are several 'versions' of ICM. One for automatic transmission vehicles does NOT have the push start function. A manual transmission truck would.
I think the ICM is the problem. Hmm. That made me wonder if the coil needs extra juice to work, or has a problem with the wires for 'normal' starting. There is a resistor in the 'normal' start circuit, I think pasted alongside the harness leading from the engine to drivers side inner fender. That resistor must be 'functional' as the engine will run & start when it is 'in circuit', but not when it is bypassed by the ICM. If the ICM has a problem with its 'start' circuit, where it bypasses the resistor, it would not send juice to the coil to get sparky.
Get a new ICM, or check the circuits on the old one. There are diagnostic tests using a VOM that can be used to determine good vs bad. If you get a new ICM, {what year now?} they are under $30 or were. If dist mounted you'll need the 'tool'. Be sure to clean the mounting surface, and apply the gooze before install. ALSO make sure the vertical contact blades go nicely into the bottom of the dist bowl. The pickup plastic deteriorates and lets the female half of the connector smush around and avoid the male. You do NOT want to have to replace the pickup as it required complete dissection of the dist.

OK. I just looked. 1992 won't have a dist. But I think the ICM is the culprit anyway.

I agree that it is the ignition module for part # f2zf-12a650-eb. Have tried to find one but no luck. Any way to figure out what other part #'s or vehicles I can look for in the junkyards? I am pretty sure that it has to be the dual plug 2.3L manual transmission. But then would it really have to be a manual trans???

I think you might be able to use a module for an automatic transmission equipped truck, BUT, it will lose the push-start feature. The distributor mounted modules, from memory, were distinguished by the push-start feature. Don't bet the paycheck.
