Cranks but won't start
I have a '98 Ranger with the 2.5L motor. This past Friday, I was going down the road and it just quit. It will crank but not start. So, I assumed it was the electric fuel pump. I first checked the fuses and relays. I had maybe a 1/4 tank of gas. The "check gage" light came on right before it stopped running also. Yesterday, I removed the truck bed and replaced the fuel pump and also the fuel filter. It still won't start. Seems to be getting spark. I checked the emergency fuel shutoff, it's ok. This morning I noticed that there's a "block" down near my passenger side exhaust manifold with a plug coming from it. 2 of the 3 wires are pulled out. I assume this is the DPFE sensor? The wires run up into a large bundle of wires that run along the firewall.
1.) How do I repair these wires?
2.) Would this prevent the truck from starting??
Please HELP!!!!

Re: Cranks but won't start
Good thing the engine is a noninterferance one. Reset your timing marks and put a new belt on. I would recommend changing out the tensioner pulley while you're there. It's not that bad really. Compared for a transverse drivetrain layout and an engine with a dual overhead cam, the 2.5L is a cake walk.

Re: Cranks but won't start
Hey we are new to this site this is a wonderful site glad I found it. We need help too!!! We have a 1994 ford ranger 4 cylinder manuel 5 speed last week while going down the road we heard a noise the alternator light came on. We went about 6 to 8 miles then the truck slowed down and stopped. We found that the tension pulley broke so we replaced the pulley then placed the serpentine belt back on. But the truck would not start just turns over. We have checked the fuel shut off switch it's ok son-in-law thinks its the fuel pump I am worried that it is the timing belt. I am concerned that it either jumped timing or the belt broke. Prior to this happening we noticed that the gas mileage has gone down. We just had a new water pump and thermostat put on the truck about a month or so ago. This is a great little truck we want to get it running. Anyone got any suggestion to what the problem is?

Re: Cranks but won't start
Sandmans got it right but while ur in there look at ur water pump its so easy to change while u have the radiator out anyway use an strong bungie cord to hold the power steering bracket and watch the lines and powersteering senor i ended up braking mine , just clean everything and get your marks correct on the pullys and your good to go

Re: Cranks but won't start
Im having the same problem right now... Im getting pretty pissed.
I have fuel, spark, and air...
-Story: Driving to practice... it stalled. The motor cranks but does not want to run.
Timing belt does seem pretty old... but it is fine. The fuel "inertia switch" is fine. Im at a wall here. Any other sensors I should know about? Ive been lurking the forum for quite some time now. But, I just had to make an account and post my problem.
Its becoming a real PITA.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Re: Cranks but won't start
you should check ur timing marks which will make more sense to change the belt while your in there because they do stretch as they age which could let it jump a tooth if u have fuel pressure and spark it should run timing is the only other big problem for not firing

Re: Cranks but won't start
I was thinking...
So I bought a can of starting fluid... she runs... so its deff a fuel issue either injectors or fuel pressure. I bought a fuel pump already. I shall go and change that thing out now.

Re: Cranks but won't start
My 2007 Ranger does that. Cranks well and gets spark but sometimes starts and sometime doesn't. Fuel pump and relay swoitch OK but when doesn't start fuel pump doesn't turn on. Can get it started by turning key 1/2 way and running thru gears, then try starting. Any ideas? my mechanic is stumped. It has automatic transmission

Re: Cranks but won't start
Hey guys, what happened with 98rangermans truck is the same with me. But I notice no free wires anywhere. If it is my timing belt, with 251xxx miles on my 97, I don't know if it is worth repairing. Any comments?
