If it's the timing belt, Rangers are non-interference engines, should not hurt it if it breaks. If it ran ok before and it's been a good truck, I would fix it.

yes if the truck is in otherwise good shape and you have time to do it.

i vote to put a new one in - and do the tensioner too, i believe it comes in a kit.

and you might consider a water pump since it's right below it.

Got a '92 Ranger yesterday, ran great on the test drive and on the way home, Turned it over several times in the process of buying it... Today I can get it to crank but won't start. I quickly learned about the fuel pump switch (a fun Easter egg to look for your first time!) but it wasn't tripped and still wouldn't start. Since this truck is new to me, I am not sure where to really start the troubleshooting. Open to any and all suggestions

try starting fluid, if it starts up then your problems are fuel related. if not, either timing belt or no spark. easy and will get you pointed in the right direction.

It's the 3 L V6 and the timing belt looks near new. Talked to a buddy and he suggested new spark plugs. I'll keep y'all posted...

Sorry airborne, but the v6 has a timing chain, not a belt. Only the 4 has a timing belt.

I'm wondering, with all the posts on this thread about people checking their timing belts if perhaps they're confusing the serpentine drive belt with the timing belt?

When you look in the engine compartment, the belt you can see is the serpentine drive belt. You have to do some work and disassembly to get to the timing belt. (and if you've gone that far on a engine with over 70k on it, change it!)

Rookie mistake! I don't have the engine torn down at all let alone enough to see that.

You are also in the wrong engine forum.

Maybe start your own thread rather than hijack someone elses?
