03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
transmission is emitting a whine once warm, the whine matches truck speed, not engine rpm, does not whine when shifting into reverse or any forward gear. Whine seems to be located around the bell housing, perhaps converter or pump, also delayed engagement/slipping once warm.
-what is the difference between a (5R44E) 2L5-CB and a 2L5-AB.
any help is appreciated.

How many miles and how often have you changed the fluid?
And what do you mean by "slip" ?
Does it pop out of gear at high RPM or does it slam hard between gears?

Re: 03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
just bought the truck, has 80k, slams hard. (if hard on throttle.) Revs then grabs. Fluid level is good, doesn't smell burned, plan on changing filter and fluid this weekend.

That's what happened to mine about a thousand miles before I blew it. Only did it on high RPM (like 5,500-6,000 RPM shifts) such as passing on the highway. What gears does it do this in? Mine was usually 2 to 3.
Seems really odd for only 80,000 miles. Hell the transmission I replaced my blown trams with had more miles.

Re: 03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
Yeah it usually does it in 2nd and 3rd, last I drove it once in third it struggled to accelerate, will a 5r44e from a 3.0 bolt up?

Re: 03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
The bell housing is different on the 2.3/2.5, 3.0, and 4.0. No dupes. Dunno if you could swap bellhousings or use the torque converters either.
If your transmission is slow to engage when cold, it is on the way out. Nothing you can fit through the filler tube will fix it. Mechanics in a can or bottle are wishful thinking.
It is possible the previous owner knew something was wrong, changed the fluid as an attempt to 'fix' it, and then sold it to you.
I do not know why, but 'line pressure' seems to always be higher in R than any of the forward gears, so though you can't go forward, you can back up all you want...
You could do a 'stall test' to see how well things are holding. Start the engine, put it in D, and floor the gas pedal for a few seconds with your foot on the brake pedal and parking/emergency brake engaged. A good transmission and converter will not allow slippage, and the engine will be 'loaded' (not racing) as you open the throttle. Do NOT repeat until you have given the transmission time to cool off as you WILL cook it with this procedure. This is a test to see how well the converter and clutches hold. If the engine races, the clutches are likely gone or on their way. This is a tough test so if you do it be very careful. WARNING you CAN damage your transmission doing this test.

Re: 03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
Tried (Power Brake Test) No slippage, did roast my tires though. Only seems to be acting up once it is warm, once above ~ thirty begins to whine and exhibit symptoms previously posted. None of my local salvage yards have a transmission that will bolt up to the 2.3.

Keep in mind all Rangers have a hard shift from 2-3. Both transmissions ive used in mine have done that. And a real hard thump when I get back on the gas from 3-2. Other forum members have that as well.
Your winding sound is with vehicle speed, not engine RPM. Opposite of the sound mine had. So I'm assuming it's something along the output shaft of the transmission is frozen up or broken. (Bad news)
Only a matter of time before the transmission burns up the rest of the way and free-spins. If you plan on replacing it yourself, it's not a hard job. I have the same motor and trans as you so if you have any questions about the install you know where to find me.
Pics for your viewing pleasure.

Re: 03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
Apparently the whine was my rear end, and the bad shifting was a bad output shaft speed sensor. Pinion may be shot. Shifts good after new sensor, in the process of changing out the gear oil, any suggestions on a good cleaner I can spray in.......

Re: 03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
If the differential is whining, then it will continue to whine until the bearing(s) replaced or the gears. You'd have to inspect the gear faces for damage to know for sure. There's no cleaner that will take away the whine.
In most cases, getting a boneyard replacement is quicker and cheaper than having someone repair the gears & differential spiders. Axle bearings may be replaced without disturbing the differential. I think input shaft bearing failure would require removal of the gearset & spider assembly unless it can be removed from the front of the housing. I do not know for sure.
Differential gear whine sounds similar to snow tire whine (yeah, sure, in AR?? ha!), and will change with vehicle speed.

Re: 03 Ranger 2.3 transmission issues
..... been awhile, ended up swapping rear ends out completely, solved the problem. Once again thanx for the info and support. Only recent problem was some trash got sucked into my maf sensor, cleaned it, idles a bit higher than normal (almost 3 grand once) on start up, drops to ~normal (a bit under a grand) under load. Maybe my throttle body valve isn't closing properly, or maybe a new thread for the new symptoms listed is in order.
