Default 01 2.3 Air tube.

So I've had this truck for a couple of years and the other day, I'm driving down the highway and I get loss of power rough idle and codes for lean condition and misfire cylinder 3.

I pop the hood and see this.

I could've sworn there was a plug or something in there. Stuffing it with a rag causes the idle to smooth out and power seems to come back. Pull the rag, and it immediately stumbles and shakes.

Is there a good way to fix this that doesn't involve replacing the air tube?

I think there may have been a tube or elbow stuffed into the hole that acted to modify intake sound or as a harmonic enhancer(brain fade) to help induction. I think it fell out. You can go to a boneyard and find a replacement, or the dealer(ouch) or plug or cover it. The MAF is not aware of the air being taken in by the engine, so the fuel:air mix is incorrect. Plug or repair, and things should go back to normal.

That's pretty much what I figured. I don't see how the engine could operate normally when there's unmetered (and unfiltered!) air straight to the throttle body.

I appreciate the sanity check. I was hoping for a cheap OEM solution, but if it's going to be a Home Depot kind of fix, that's fine too. The truck's not going to win any beauty contests.

I honestly have no idea what's supposed to go there. Mine has two of those little ports but they're capped off. I watched a video on a valve cover replacement where the guy had some junk hooked up to it which looked like factory. Could be for specific state emission requirements.

Looks like the cap may have popped loose and fallen off. Just find something to plug it. Obviously be careful you don't give any small objects the opportunity to get sucked inside.

Yeah it's about that size, mine has two I believe. One is smaller than the dip lid haha

Shit, stick the plastic can over the hose.

She runs great!

I even tried to get it back out so I could dab some silicone on it to seal the edges and that ain't happening.
