Default 1996 2.3L Oil Leak

I've got an oil leak that pretty much drains all the oil by the time I clock 2000 miles. I've determined that when I change it myself, I just cant get the oil drain plug tight enough. When I take it to Jiffy Lube, they use the power tools to get the plug on so tight I can barely get it off myself- BUT it doesn't leak. So I'm fairly sure its leaking at the plug.

Anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this leak? Would a new plug do the trick, or should I be looking into some sort of gasket? Anyone know the specific parts I'd want to get?

It probably has horrible cross thread damage. Both the pan and the plug.
A new threaded hole needs to be made in the pan while it's removed and new plug that matches the new threads obtained.

Ah, thanks for the replies guys.

Looking into the pricing on that, I think I'll try out just getting the plug and gasket. Ford's part site is listing a little shy of $200 for the pan, which is beyond my available funds at the moment. I guess if the plug+gasket doesn't work, I'll work on getting the pan replaced as well.

Thanks!

Uh, yeah... Fast oil change places will screw your vehicle up in a heart beat. The people who work there are only required to be able to breathe and respond to simple directions. Try to repair your existing pan but it is a possibility that you may need to get a new pan and drain plug.

yeah. id try the new plug and gasket first, if it still leaks, re-thread it and put a new plug in. and LASTLY, put a new pan on it. but i dont think i'd jump straight to a new pan. thats a lot of dough! good luck!

I would say drop the oil pan replace it because of the use of power tools, replace the drip plug and replace the oil pan gasket and that should work.

well i could sell you an oil pan off a turbocoupe if you can't fix yours. They are steel, not aluminum like yours, but it'll work.

You have to raise up the engine, almost pulling it, to remove the oil pan...just a thought.
