Building a 2.3 help
So I'm rebuilding my 2.3 and I wanna get alittle more power out of it, money isn't really a issue but I would prefer to keep it naturally aspirated, I'm already getting forged pistons and thinking about boring out the cylinders, I also wanna get a cam, what is a nice mild cam that won't require different valves or rockers. Thanks in advance.

add a few cylinders at the same time, and bore it to a 5.0, that'll get you a decent power increase

Yea everyone keeps telling me to do that, the problem is that I still want a mild truck that's good on gas but I can still have fun in. I love the 2.3 that I currently have and I don't mind throwing some money at it to make it alittle more powerful

Re: Building a 2.3 help
I have another question about camshafts, I was reading that my engine has a compression ratio of 9 to 1 if I were to use a cam for a compression ratio of 10 to 1 what would the side effects be besides not very much low end torque

swapping a cam out won't change compression ratio.

I know it won't change the compression ratio but certain cams say "best when used with (certain compression ratio)" so if I were to use a cam that says best when used with a 10 to 1 ratio in a engine with a 9 to 1 ratio what would the effect be.

Re: Building a 2.3 help
And just one more question, can I replace the roller rockers with solid rockers to use a solid cam

I would but no one has roller cams that offer a good performance for cheaper price they are all 450 and over, and this truck isn't a daily driver anymore so I really don't wanna spend a ridiculous amount on a cam that would only be driven once maybe twice a week. Especially when I can get solid rockers and a solid cam for 250 bucks

Re: Building a 2.3 help
If you replace the cam with new, replace the followers at the same time, especially flat, non-roller followers. Using old followers may, repeat, may cause the lobes to wear oddly and more quickly than expected. If you look closely at the follower friction spot, it will have bit of grooving, it will not be perfectly smooth. The lobe and follower wear together. They marry, and if divorced, who gets the kids? Swapping positions to another lobe leads, I think, to quicker wear.
I would not put a new cam in without replacing the followers if they were non-roller.
If you don't drive it, why put the $$'s into making it perform better? I don't get it. I drive my truck as my 99% mode of transport, and the thing I would do if given the opportunity is install some roller followers. Eh, to each their own.

I do drive it on a regular basis just not as much as I used to since I got a newer quieter car, this truck is basically my toy, I use it on trails and rallycross and whenever I need to haul something. And as everyone knows the 2.3 is gutless, I'm just trying to get power out of that for what I like to do and if it involves throwing money at it then so be it, I love working on vehicles and now that I have the money and a vehicle with a capable engine and a large aftermarket for parts I figured why not try something new.

Re: Building a 2.3 help
Your truck already has solid rockers since rollers weren't added until 95. Adding rollers to an older head is very involved because the valve stems are larger on 94 and older heads and the cam followers have larger slots. Get a cam for non roller followers.

Re: Building a 2.3 help
Adding rollers to an older head will work fine, if you get the 'first' era of roller followers. There are two sizes of valve stems, and at least 3 styles of followers.
flat followers with wide stems
roller followers with wide stems
roller followers with narrow stems
The middle can be fitted to the 2.3 going back as far as ... Just install them.
