You have pretty much answered your own question. Something you did isn't right.

From easiest to hardest, do this.

1. Go to Auto Zone and borrow a fuel pressure gauge. Check what you have.

2. Have an electrician or electronic friend check the resistance of the new wires. There should be a constant amount of resistance per foot of wire.

3. GENTLY remove the plugs, one at a time. Recheck the gap. Clean the plugs thoroughly and look for hairline cracks. It's easy to get a little out of line and crack a plug. If you did, replace it.

Now that I've thought further (and phone won't allow me to edit), what kind of plugs did you use?

Rangers are finicky ! There are only 3 plugs that are recommended.

Motorcraft

NGK

Autolite

In recent years, I have REALLY become a fan of NGK. They are reliable and long lasting.

For plug wires, I can personally recommend these for a Ranger.

Motorcraft

Belden

NGK

Those are all I will use, but opinions vary.

When you change the fuel filter, the pump has to re-fill the fuel line that feeds up to the engine as it drains out when the filter is removed. Try turning the key from OFF to ON, leave ON for about 5 seconds, then back to OFF. Repeat this a half dozen times.
The fuel pump will run for 3-5 seconds at each cycle from OFF to ON, and will refill the fuel lines, and make fuel available to the engine for immediate use.
Try starting the engine after doing the above. It should start better as fuel is there for immediate use.

sounds like you're losing fuel somewhere, either onto the ground or back into the tank. Double check all the fuel filter connections aren't wet. Then IMO consider a fuel pump.

I'll check that first thing in the morning
Before I changed my filter it wasn't doing this so I don't think it's my fuel pump

then I'd definitely inspect the fuel filter connections. If they are all dry, try getting the fuel filter warrantied through the shop that changed it. Could be a problem with the internals of it (kinda doubtful but stranger things have happened).

My mechanic friend is the one that did it for me but I bought the part from AutoZone so I'll call him and ask if something happened when he changed it out

So I checked and it's not leaking at all doesn't feel wet after starting it and running it for a few minutes I'm think maybe a bad filter
