You most likely need to clean or replace the idle air control valve. Is the check engine light on?

Not sure why it's worse with the a/c on, but I had similar problems in the past that went away after changing the fuel filter.

Stalling and failing idle would be worse with the A/C on because the A/C uses the compressor, which is another load on the engine. The IAC is instructed to 'bump up the idle speed' when the computer gets the signal the compressor is going to engage. The bump helps handle the load without stalling. If the IAC is gummy, or slow to respond, or stuck, the load may kill the engine idle.

When I first bought my Ranger, I joined this forum. The wealth of knowledge is unbelievable!

Here is a pic of my IAC before and after cleaning. Our engines are slightly different, but this component is almost identical.

Q-tips and the appropriate cleaner will do wonders for your truck. Your general owner doesn't realize the importance of these items and NEVER clean them.

It makes a difference!
