Default 97 b2300 - engine video (not sounding right)

I recently purchased a used 97 Mazda b2300. It has salvage title, and has been a little difficult to Smog/Register.
There were aftermarket Headers put on, which causes issues with smog because I don't have paperwork for headers, and the stock parts are not available to switch back.
I will need to go to "referee" to get exemption then return to Smog shop.

Something about the engine does not sound right, it sometimes almost dies then comes back to life (it does this in the opening seconds of the video). I recorded this video and listed it (non-publicly) on Youtube - hoping someone could determine the issue.

Also the E-brake does not release fully, so I can barely drive it without powering through a partial e-brake. I think if I remove the tire I can retract it?

Here is the link:

Here is the link pasted in another form (I will add a space between www. & youtube..... ) so copy and paste link but remove space (that way it doesn't embed the video in a form unavailable to watch)
https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=ou2Up-yg9AQ

Here is another version of the same link, maybe this works (I made the video public now too)

Thanks in advance for the knowledge,
Casey

I did not notice any problem, but a camera phone does not have the best microphone so the sound is difficult to comprehend. If you don't have sound... you can record an engine running for hours and not 'see' a thing amiss.
I would connect a scan tool to read what is happening when you hear the engine start to miss or shake or whatever it does. Watch fuel and IAC commands, at least.

FoMoCo made some pretty nice factory 'headers' for the 2.3, they almost looked aftermarket. Are you positive you have replacements from aftermarket?
You might google for pictures, or dig a bit deeper here or at ford-trucks dot com, or therangerstation.

1997 came factory with a "header" looking exhaust manifold.

Can you take a picture of the "header" to make sure its not the factory one?

I will try to take a better video with better sound.

But I am not positive they are not factory, but my smog tech failed me for that reason.
I will call smog guy and ask how he can be so sure

If the header has an EGR pipe connect at the flange then it's factory. Aftermarket header were made for dirt track guys so it definitely didn't have the EGR tube bung on it. You will probably get the best view from the passenger wheel well. Factory header will also have bolt extension tubes welded to the flange.

Harbor freight has code scanners, I'd recommend you go buy one because they will save you a lot of time, guess work, and money in the long run.

Check the adds in the fresno bee for a 20% off coupon.

What part of fresno are you in? I'm in clovis.

If your gonna get a scanner get this and download Forscan. It can scan very module in your truck just like the dealership. Harbor freight one can't do that.

I have that same scanner, works great!

As for your engine try cleaning the MAF sensor and that kinda stuff.

OK very cool on the recommendation for scanner, I have an iPhone and that does not look compatible for ios - I could read reviews to find best ioS version on Amazon... but let me know if you have recommendation for iPhone because I'm not yet clear on the features that one had vs. Harbor Freight version

Will check out that MAF sensor (although not sure what that is at the moment) and post better pic of Headers

Priorities are to: figure out Headers, get gage/engine light off, and retract e-brake before taking this truck to the next level of registering....so far I appreciate the assistance bc I think I now have a strategy for each

PS - i live near Fresno/Sierra intersection, used to live/currently working in Clovis

Better yet, just go by Advance Auto/Auto zone and they will scan your codes for free!

MAF = Mass Air Flow it should be just past the air filter on the intake.

You need a special cleaner for it, don't go using carb cleaner or anything else on it.

I have a very early version Bluetooth scanner and the apps for iPhone at the time weren't intuitive.

At autozone or pep boys when you ask for a free scan the mechanic usually comes out with a handheld orbll one like the HF- picks up enough to get you going...
I have a similar actron one and am able to read and erase codes...durable, simple to use and understand.

I could not determine the stall at start up on your video but sounds like something is putting a drag on a belt.

That's how my engine ran when I accidentally got the spark plug wires hooked up the wrong way on my coil packs. Might want to check those and make sure they are hooked up correctly.
