Revs up but won't drive in "D"
I have a 2001, automatic 6-cyl, 3.0. I was driving it on the highway on my way to work and was picking up speed, I believe i was at about 40mph, and all of a sudden the engine starts revving up and I start losing speed. I then pulled over to the side of the road and waited to see what would happen. Started playing around with the gear selector and put it in drive to see if it would go after a few minutes, but nothing. It wouldn't reverse either (at work i realized it does reverse but very slowly). The "O/D Off" light came on. After 10 minutes I realized that if I put it in manual 2nd gear I could drive it and that's how i managed to get to work. It stays in park, and neutral works i think. What could this problem be? How can I fix this?

take it to a transmission shop. Trans is most likely shot.

I had the same problem in my jeep all automatic Trannys have shift solenoids and a torque lock solenoid some Trannys have bands there easy to replace plus you might just need to replace the filter and fluid cause it sounds like it got clogged. Haven't had any serious probs outta my ranger thou I fixed my jeep and now I gotta fix my Dodge Ram, plus you said you where able to drive it a little by puting it in different gears so it sounds like solenoids burnt out and your tranny isn't shot if it was shot your wheels would've locked out and your tranny woulvde shit all over the road so all your planetary gears should be fine it's either bands or solenoids

Re: Revs up but won't drive in "D"
What about 1st manual gear and Drive with the O/D turned off?
Usually when other gears fail but the manual ones that points to a sprag that has flipped its teeth.

I can't engage 1st gear, and no noticeable changes occur when the O/D is turned off.

You said your overdrive light came on. That means there is an error code which can be pulled with a scanner. Can you get it to a car part store to pull the code?

Any grinding when just shift in drive does it even feel like the torque converter engages??? Anything is possible but jumping to the conclusion that your first gear has flipped it's teeth without dropping the tranny oil pan too see if there's a lot of metal in the filter or pan is kinda since less plus your TCM transmission control module tells your solenoids how to engage and might be malfunctioning in D

Re: Revs up but won't drive in "D"
First thing to check is the fluid level. The transmission won't work without enough fluid. The pressure used to apply clutches, servos and move internal valve body parts(governor) is not developed if the fluid level is down.
Reverse has the 'most' pressure of any driven selections, at least in the majority of transmissions, so it would be the 'last to go' in most cases of burned clutches, etc.

Re: Revs up but won't drive in "D"
Do you know which transmission you have?
There will be a code in your door jam sticker.
Below the barcode between AXLE and SPR will say TR. What does it say under it?
Should be D or T.
Here is a check you can do to see if it is the low sprag.
Put the truck in 2nd.
Drive until the RPMs are relatively high (like it should be shifting at this point) and put the shifter into drive.
It should up shift to 3rd gear.
The low gear sprag is used in overdrive 1 & 2, drive 1 & 2, and manual 1st.
