I just got a 1999 ford ranger xlt 2.5 5spd extended cab and im about to flush the engine and change the oil. The previous owner was using 10w-30 and i wanted to make sure this is correct. I notice a slight tick in the head for a minute or 2 while warming up then it goes away this seems to be a common problem and nothing to worry about because its just oil seeping into the right places? Is this correct and does 10w-30 sound correct. The truck is also right around 170,000 miles and driving great

5W-30 is what is recommended though 10W-30 is fine. It's in your owner's manual. If you don't have one, you can down load the pdf from the ford website as well any other pamphlets you should have in your glove box.

i have the same truck with aboout 130k. I dont know what was run it whne i got with 88k but i used mobil full snthetic. it odes not leak or use any oil. the manual calls for 5w30 that is what i use with a motorcraft fl-400s

* I actually just changed my oil sunday i do it at 4k. the last time i ran castrol dino high mileage just for the heck of it. I put the mobil 1 FS back in. I swear it let out a little thankyou.

is it ok to just switch to full synthetic in these vehicles. I know my previous honda did not like full synthetic what so ever

Ihave read a lot about this topic. There are all kinds of opionions. this is what i go by. you can swap from dino to syn. I recommend that if you swap just stay with either one( I know i just did the oppsite on my truck but it was only once in 35k miles) if you have leaks with dino they might be a little worse with syn. if you have no leaks with dino you should be fine. my little 2.5 loves the syn..........i run syn mercon(mercon V) in my tranny also.

sweet ive also began to think about flushing my tranny and dif as i dont think its been done. Is there a reason or way to do this with the 2.5 5 spd tranny and the diff is pretty simple of course.

Think of the molecules in conventional oil as balls on a gym floor the balls go from golfballs to beachballs. Synthetic oil is made of all golfballs

you have a drain and fill plug on the side of the tranny remove the drain plug then the fill plug. it takes a littl eover 3 quarts. you can fill it trhu the engine bay with a funnel and a 3 foot hose. or you can pump it in. you can use mercon or mercon V. I did not know the history of my truck so i did a drain and fill with cheap mercon and drove it for a few thousand miles. I then did it again and used hte mercon V. some people put gear oil or reguler oil in there you DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT.

I just checked the fluid on my diff i did not drain it you need to remove the cover to drain it.you take out the plug that is near the drivshaft. you fill it to that plug. the differential takes gear oil. if you have a limitedslip diff you need a additive. you need to determine what axle you have. the axle code is on the label on the drivers side door post.

you also want to check your leafspring hangers and shackles for rust. depending on where you live they might be rusted. my 99 they rusted thru and the truck is not rusty at all.

awesome and i will definentally be doing these things and im guessing the tranny u also fill to level with the fill bolt. Basically to where its not pouring out. And mecron is a manual transmission fluid found at autoparts stores correct? Thank you again for all the info

Mercon is auto tranny fluid. Most modern manual transmissions use auto tranny fluid though, as it is thinner and provides better economy.
