No electrical Power
Hey guys! Pretty new here. Anyways I'll cut to the chase.
1984 2.3. My project truck right now, and when I tried to start it up today there was no power. At all. No crank, no noise, and none of the lights work. Basically nothing works. It cranked up just fine a couple weeks ago when I last turned it on. Haven't done much since then as I've been busy. But last week a took out my old cb to stick in my other rig, and was screwing around under the dash near the fuse box to get it out. Thinking maybe I messed something up while under there? Battery looks fine, and wires there look intact and connected. But I'll double check all that.
Thinking maybe a fusible link is to blame? Or a ground?
Any help would be great guys.

Re: No electrical Power
Batteries, wires and cables can look fine, but look don't mean anything. You need to test the battery, take the cables off and clean them.

Re: No electrical Power
I would put a charger on the battery and note the amperage it takes. I'd bet after a couple weeks it may have self-discharged, which is normal over time. If the battery is elderly, it will do that more.
You can use a VOM to check battery voltage on the battery posts to know charge condition. If that is OK, check the terminals are tight, and the short red wire to the relay is tight on the relay as that feeds all the rest of the truck.

Re: No electrical Power
Okay, here is an update. I checked the battery, and it was barely reading voltage. So, I tried to jump it, and while being jumped my lights and everything would work, but it will still not crank. And after I stop charging it it quickly loses charge and will not even turn my lights on. I tried charging it for about 10 minutes and when I turn the key nothing happened. No sound at all, no click or nothing. Could my batter be toast?
Or maybe just so dead that I need to charge it much longer?

Yes, it may need more time charging. I would leave the charger connected for some time before trying to start. I remember getting anxious to try, and having to tell myself, WAIT.
It takes time to recharge a discharged battery. If the battery is totally discharged, it may be ruined permanently. Some 'never add water' batteries will damage their plates if discharged fully, and be useless. If the charger has a meter, observe the amps indicated, and report...
You could jump from another vehicle, BUT beware that some alternators are not designed to re-charge a dead battery, or can ruin themself trying to re-charge a ruined battery. They may put out full amps as long as the engine is running, and are not designed to do that, so will / can overheat. Try a real charger first. YMwV.

Re: No electrical Power
Look at the month and year sticker on top of the battery, if the year tells you the battery is over 5 years old, it probably died a natural death.

Re: No electrical Power
Well the date on the battery is 5 years and 3 months old. Looks like I'll have to get a new one. Hopefully that will solve my problem!
