Default 1997 2.3 wont start

I have a 1997 Mazda B2300 2.3 engine I was driving the other day and it just shut off. The gas gauge doesnít work so I just thought I was out of gas but I wasnít. When I turn on the key the fuel pump relay clicks rapidly causing the fuel pump to due the same and it doesnít stop. I swapped the relays around still the same thing. I pulled the bed off changed the fuel pump, relays, checked all the wiring for bare spots exc. I still have the same problem. I tried to pull an engine code but the scanner would not connect to the computer. The truck turns over fine but will not start. After turning it over for an extended amount of time the clicking stops and it will start that shut right back down . I determined that as long as the clicking is going on it will not start any ideas?

you probably have a blown fuse for the obd-ii data port. I think it might be the cigarette lighter fuse. either way check your manual and replace the correct fuse. then read the codes and post them here

you can get a manual at https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

Thanks for the quick response. I checked all the fuses and they were good. When I pug in the scanner it gets power but an error code appears. I looked in the manual for the scanner and it stated the error code was that the computer and scanner were not linking up. Could it be a computer problem?

Thanks,
Shawn

It would not give me a code due to not linking up with the computer.

Scanner is a INNOVA 3030 I rechecked all the fuses. I done a voltage check on the fuel pump relay The small blue/orange wire going to the relay was reading 8.2 volts, the two green and yellow connected wires was reading 2.2v and the needle on the volt meter was shaking. The larger blue and orange wire was reading 12v , red wire was reading 12v and I have 2.2v at the fuel pump. I had the key on and the relay quit clicking and the truck started and ran fine for about a minute and then it shut off and the fuel pump relay started clicking rapidly again and truck would not start and I still could not get a reading with the code scanner.

Thanks
Shawn

Hi, I am currently having this same exact problem with a '96 Ranger. Did you ever resolve this problem? And if so, how?

Thanks,
Josh

The truck is '96 2.3 ranger with automatic transmission. The rapidly clicking comes from the module box and at first I thought it was the fuel relay. I replaced it but the clicking continues. After looking at the module box diagram, it's the relay for the pcm. Pulling the 30 amp pcm fuse stops the clicking and so does the pcm diode pin. During the clicking eposides, you can hear the fuel pump priming and repriming with each click (new fuel pump also). The check engine light will pulse with each click also. Everything else works fine; headlights come on and the radio comes on. The truck will crank, and start up but will immediately die when the clicking starts (when it's cold). I cleaned the ground on the battery, and tried to make sure all the grounds on the wiring harness were secured.

The truck had a full tuneup (all belts replaced, plugs, wires, etc.) just over a year ago (driven less than a 1000 miles since then though). This problem occured just yesterday out of the blue.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

You might be able to swap the pcm relay with another one I.E. The blower relay

I swapped the relays around last night to see if it was a bad relay, but it still continued to click regardless which of the three I put in.

I am oaut of ideas then......if you replaced both the fuel pump and pcm relays and it still does it.......I am not sure what it would be.....maybe a ground pin in the pcm..... or a ground connection at the distribution box!

you are checking the pcm relay right.......the pcm relay must be working for the fuel pump relay to work........if the pcm relay is turning on and off it probably will turn the fuel pump relay on and off........check the harness that the relays go into.....i bet they are bad or broken......
