Easy way to get to TDC. Remove number 1 spark plug. Have some one turn the engine over. Using a ratchet or socket or "bumping" the ignition. Once your finger is pushed out you are TDC

Straight on if your talking about visual paralax error. Center your perspective to the marks. (Diagram A)
If you take out the spark plug like Mykhael suggests, you can pinpoint tdc as the midpoint between the cylinder rising and falling and to hell with the marks.

What we're working on is a 94 Mazda b2300. We just replaced the timing belt and it ended up running pretty poorly afterwords so we started second guessing. But the timing belt seems to be on right. Also, during the replacement, we noticed a sensor around the crank pulley. Could anyone tell us what that is?

Well, We did end up giving the piece rotating around the sensor a noticeable bend with the pulley puller. It doesn't collide with anything, but it's definitely not as smooth as it was. Is this a major problem? Also, is the oil pump connected to the ignition timing?

The alignment finger is seated around the crank shaft sensor, is that what you bent? It's like a little triangle.

What did you bend ?

Are you sure the cam was locked into alignment when you put the belt on?
