Default will an exhaust give me a happy face?

2010 2.3

i know the horse is dead and I want to light it up more this 4th of july so it can live again and then die again a happy death.

Is there an exhaust that is CALIFORNIA EMMISSIONS LEGAL THAT CAN PASS SMOG CHECK that can make a noticeable difference in power output and put a smile in my face?

2010 2.3 stick with reverse. stock engine except high flow air filter drop in if it matters at all. It already in my opinion has good "gotta get to work in time get outta my way" power for a 2.3.

Or NAH it will only create noise and no more go and make my wallet skinny...

It'll just be a noisemaker. Save $ for a turbo.

+1

You might even lose some power where it matters (down low) due to a decrease in backpressure.

A turbo will cure what ails you, but it will be expensive and with a duratec... especially if you want to keep A/C... its very hard to fit the turbo. Ive done research over on the turbo ranger forums and to this day Ive only seen 2 duratecs successfully turbocharged. 1 had no A/C to accommodate the turbo, and the other had the turbo and its intake mounted precariously under the vehicle. Intercooler setups would make it even more of a nightmare. Sadly, the lima is probably a better platform to turbocharge.

IMO, if you want more go, better sound, and decent mileage, you need to drop in a 5.0l V8. Prolly get 17 in town and 23-25 on the fwy, have about 350 horses or so, and it will sound like a stang Ive already decided- once I get a new car, im going to drop a blown built 5.0 into the ranger. Hardest part for me is choosing a transmission. Anyways, sorry to smash your dreams

Grah, I didnt remember he needed california legal setup. So much for the v8. Same thing where I am really. I fear the day when every area and vehicle will need to pass emissions in order to be registered.

If you want to do anything cool to your truck, then you are living in the wrong state, pal. I wouldn't think that a catback exhaust would be a problem in California, since it's completely past the cats. But that also affects the muffler, as well as any resonator on there already. I don't know Cali's restrictions on those. I imagine they're probably very dumb.

The only restriction on anything after the cat is you can't run it straight piped.

Well, in that case, just about any aftermarket kit will be fine. The Duratec does respond pretty well to higher airflow, so opening the exhaust a bit right after opening the intake will certainly add some power. Not much, of course. The few hundred $$$ you spend on all of the stuff isn't going to translate to a few hundred $$$ of extra torque. It'll feel and sound like it did though.

The one thing to keep in mind is that exhaust pipe diameter is really critical here. Opening it up too much will mostly likely do nothing. I think 2"–2.25" is considered the happy spot for this motor. I went 2.5" on mine, but it splits into dual 1.75" at the muffler. Did that make a difference? I have no idea. It sounds cool though. :3
