Questions on building a 2.3l with 250whp
So, i have a 1990 2.3l 2wd with a M5R1 5spd trans(rebuilt) and i know for a fact i have to ake the block into the shop to get bored and honed. Now my questions are when i get it back from the shop with a .060 oversized bore what my next step should be to reaching my 250 WHP goal? should i go the turbo route or an all motor? money is not too much of an object but im going to save where i can, i just want something that will be reliable while still dropping panties. any help will be greatly appreciated.
on a side note is it possible to run a 11:1 compression ratio with a t4 turbo and 30psi spray? i already have a turbo and the nitrous equipment i just need to get my bottles re-certified...because that would be my dream setup there seeing as how i would only need a new harness and Vane air flow sensor after the rebuild.

I have to ask: why not just get a 5.0 V8? Youd prolly get better gas mileage than a hopped up 2.3l, and itd be way nicer to drive with all the torque compared to some peaky turbo'd 4 cylinder trying to push the truck. Also, while the M5OD might be handle 250whp, im not sure that a 7.5 rear end could for very long (i certainly could be wrong). When starting with a 2.3l, you have to ask yourself if its worth it- by the time youve put an 8.8 rear end in, possibly a tranny that would be more tolerant of the power, and dealt with all the modifications necessary to either drop in a V8 or accomodate a turbo, intercooler, etc etc, you might as well have bought a different vehicle..
Not trying to be a killjoy- you do what you do.

You will never pass emissions testing with a turbo in California.

I already have to get a smog pass as it is, so passing emissions isnt my main concern.

Re: Questions on building a 2.3l with 250whp
He has a 90 and the turbo 2.3 was stopped in the 80s, the engine has to be the same year or newer, and no ca emissions legal turbo kit exists for rangers unless you buy a ranger made before 1988 then you can swap svo or turbo coupe engines into your ranger or use parts from those engines.

In Washington, if the truck is older than 20 years it doesn't have to pass emissions... Is it not the same in California?

Nope. Before 1976 for regular vehicles and
Before 1998 for diesels.
